“The Gospel Story: The Risen and Glorified Christ”
“The Apostle’s Creed,” which reads as follows:
I believe in God the Father Almighty; Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven; and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from where he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy universal Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8, Romans 4:25,
The bodily resurrection of Jesus from the dead is an objective historical fact. 1 Peter 1:3
The resurrection of Jesus vindicates both his person and his work. Romans 1:2-4
The resurrection of Jesus has installed him as the King and Judge of the world. Acts 2:22-36, Philippians 2:9-11 Acts 17:29-31
Jesus did not stay in the tomb; God raised him to life again as the ruler of the world.

Living as God’s People in Every Relationship: 1 Peter 3:8-12
Review
• Live as God’s exiles in a hostile world (2:11-4:11).
o As good citizens (2:13-17).
o As obedient slaves (2:18-25).
o As faithful husbands and wives 3:1-7).
o In every relationship (3:8-12).
Live as God’s People in Every Relationship of Life
• Live a life of love and non-retaliation…
• Putting your ultimate hope in the reward of God’s blessing.
1. Live a life of love.
1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
2. Live a life of non-retaliation.
1 Peter 3:9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing…
Romans 12:10, 14 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Romans 12:17-18 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.
Romans 12:20-21 On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Matthew 5:38-39 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
Matthew 5:40-42 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
3. Put your ultimate hope in the reward of God’s blessing.
1 Peter 3:9 …because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
Quoting from Psalm 34:12-16…
1 Peter 3:10-11 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
1 Peter 3:9 …because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:4-5 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
Psalm 34:15-16 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry; but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to blot out their name from the earth.
Psalm 37:4-5 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:11-12 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Living as God’s People at Home - 1 Peter 3:1-7
Review
• We are God’s chosen exiles (1:1-2).
• Praise God for his mercy (1:3-12).
• Live holy lives (1:13-25).
• We are God’s new covenant people (2:1-10).
• Live as God’s exiles in a hostile world (2:11-4:11).
Review
• Live as God’s exiles in a hostile world (2:11-4:11).
As good citizens (2:13-17).
As obedient slaves (2:18-25).
As faithful husbands and wives 3:1-7).
Live as God’s People in the Home
• Wives should be submissive and respectful to their husbands;
• husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives…
• …for the sake of the Gospel.
Wives Living for the Gospel
• In Respectful Submission
• As a Witness to the Gospel
• In Inner Beauty of Character
• Following the Example of Godly Women of Faith
1 Peter 3:1-2 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
Biblical Submission of Wives
• Based on the Created Order, Genesis 2:7 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
1 Timothy 2:12-13 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
Biblical Submission of Wives
• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Biblical Submission of Wives
• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
• Finds an analogy in the submission of Christ to the Father.
John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Biblical Submission of Wives
• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
• Finds an analogy in the submission of Christ to the Father.
• For the purpose of fulfilling God-given roles.
1 Corinthians 12:18-21 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"
1 Corinthians 12:25-27 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
Purpose of Submission
• Why does Peter instruct wives to live in respect and submission to their husbands?
• So that they can serve as a witness to the gospel through their behavior.
1 Peter 3:1-2 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
A wordless gospel?
• Peter instructs wives to win over their husbands to the gospel “without a word.”
• The gospel message is necessary for salvation, but these Christian wives can “adorn” the gospel with their godly conduct.
Romans 10:14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Titus 2:9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,
Titus 2:10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
Wives Living for the Gospel
• In Respectful Submission
• As a Witness to the Gospel
• In Inner Beauty of Character
1 Peter 3:3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
1 Peter 3:4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
Wives Living for the Gospel
• In Respectful Submission
• As a Witness to the Gospel
• In Inner Beauty of Character
• Following the Example of Godly Women of Faith
1 Peter 3:5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,
1 Peter 3:6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
Live as God’s People in the Home
• Wives should be submissive and respectful to their husbands;
• husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives…
• …for the sake of the Gospel.
1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
Husbands Living for the Gospel
• Considerate and Respectful
• In Honor of Wife’s God-Given Characteristics and Role
• Heirs Together of Grace of Eternal Life
• For the Sake of Your Prayers
James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
God’s Pattern Corrupted
• God’s ideal pattern for loving male leadership and respectful female submission was corrupted by the Fall.
Genesis 3:16
To the woman he said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
Genesis 4:6-7 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."
Genesis 3:16 (NLT) Then he said to the woman, "I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you."
God’s Pattern Corrupted
• God’s ideal pattern for loving male leadership and respectful female submission was
corrupted by the Fall.
• But through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God’s pattern for a holy home can be reclaimed.
Live as God’s People in the Home
• Wives should be submissive and respectful to their husbands;
• husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives…
• …for the sake of the Gospel.

Reading the Bible In Translation
chapter 3
As we are reading the Bible as a guide for all of life…
We should be grateful that we have access to God’s Word in our own language, so that we can understand its truth.
Ø Why do we need the Bible to be translated?
• God chose to inspire his prophets and apostles to write in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
• Translation of God’s Word into another language has a long history and is even present in the Bible itself.
Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed. Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today." That is why it was called Galeed. (Gen 31:47-48 NIV)
They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. (Neh 8:8 NIV)
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"). (Mat 27:46 NIV)
• Jesus and the apostles quoted from the Greek translation of the Old Testament that was available in their day.
• Throughout the history of God’s people, the sacred writings have been translated into various languages.
Ø Why do we have so many translations?
• Challenge of translation
• Advances in textual and linguistic information
• Language changes
• Different intended audiences
• Different translation techniques
Ø What are the different types of translations?
• Formal equivalent
• KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV
• Functional equivalent
• NLT, CEV
• Balanced
• NIV, HCSB
Ø Is a translation the Word of God and can I have confidence in it?
• Translations are done by committees of scholars and are reviewed and checked for accuracy.
• Translations have been used by the church from the beginning.
Ø Should I use one translation or more than one?
• Yes.
• One regular translation for consistency and familiarity in reading and memorization.
• Multiple translations for study and comparison.
Ø Should I be thankful for the Bible in translation?
• 2251/6912 languages still do not have any Scripture.
• Those before us gave their lives so that we could have the Bible in our language.
• The Bible in our language is a gift of God’s grace.

"The Gospel Story: God’s Righteous Judgment”
Matthew 25:31-34; Matthew 25:41; Matthew 25:46, Mark 9:47-48
God’s righteous judgment has already been seen in history. Genesis 6:5-7
God’s righteous judgment is seen in our own human mortality. Genesis 2:16-17, Romans 6:23, Hebrews 9:27, Matthew 10:28
God’s righteous judgment will be seen at the end of the world. Acts 17:30-31, 2 Peter 3:3-10, Romans 5:9-10, Romans 8:1
Because our Creator God is just and righteous, he must punish rebellion with death and hell.

“The Coming King” - Isaiah 9:6-7 –
(Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/December 1, 2013)
1. Our dark world longs for the light of hope, peace, and
justice.
Consult God's instruction and the testimony of warning. If
anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.
Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished,
they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their
God. Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness
and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness. (Isa. 8:20–22,
NIV)
2. The longing of the world was fulfilled in a baby boy
who would be King.
Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were
in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of
the Sea, beyond the Jordan– The people walking in darkness have seen a great
light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. (Isa.
9:1–2, NIV)
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the
government will be on his shoulders…
(Isa. 9:6, NIV)
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
(Jn. 1:4, NIV)
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am
the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the light of life." (Jn. 8:12, NIV)
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who
believes in me should stay in darkness. (Jn. 12:46, NIV)
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and
brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption,
the forgiveness of sins. (Col. 1:13-14, NIV)
3. This King is a righteous king who will bring the hope,
peace, and justice that we long for.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be
no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and
upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The
zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (Isa. 9:7, NIV)
4. This is no ordinary King, but the God-man Jesus
Christ, who will reign forever.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the
government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(Isa. 9:6, NIV)
Main Idea: The only hope for our dark world
is found in the God-man, Jesus Christ, and the peace, justice, and
righteousness that he brings.

Read the Bible for Life by George Guthrie
Chapter 1
If we are going to read the Bible as a guide for all of life…
We must have a commitment to:
The Bible comes from God.
The Bible is true and without error.
The Bible is my authority.
The Bible is my authority.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16-17 NIV)
Baptist Catechism #5
Q. May all men make use of the holy scriptures?
A. All men are not only permitted, but commanded and exhorted to read, hear, and understand the holy scriptures (John 5:38; Rev. 17:18, 19; 1:3; Acts 8:30).
How do we know the Bible is the Word of God?
The Bible evidences itself to be the Word of God by the heavenliness of its doctrine, the unity of its parts, and its power to convert sinners and edify saints. But only the Spirit of God can make us willing to agree and submit to the Bible as the Word of God.
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Cor 2:13-14 NIV)
We must allow our thinking and view of the world to be shaped by the truth of the Bible.
God’s view of the world is reality.
The Bible’s truth and authority touches on every area of life.
We don’t just read and interpret the Bible; it interprets us.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Heb 4:12 NIV)
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. (James 1:22-24 NIV)
If the Bible is going to shape our view of the world, we need purposeful and constant exposure to it.
Unexpected Tornadoes
Not an encyclopedia, but daily food
Life Habits
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Rom 12:1-2 NIV)
If the Bible is going to be our guide for life, we need to discipline ourselves to read it well.
Misinterpretation
Misapplication
Reading our situations into the Bible
Failing to see the big picture
As we read the Bible to shape our view of the world, we have to read the parts in light of the whole.
Bible’s Big Story
Creation, Fall, Redemption, New Creation
Progressive Revelation
Unfolding of Covenants
As the Word shapes our view of life and provides light for our path, it will also provide strength and encouragement for the journey.
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (Rom 15:4 NIV)
Reading the Bible as a guide for life is more about a whole-life commitment than a quick-fix methodology.

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”[b]
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
8 and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

1. The Bible is God’s Living Word (Heb 4:12).
2. The Reading of the Bible should be effecting love for God and life change.
3. Why Should Christians Read the Bible?
a. To know the truth (2 Pet 1:20–21).
b. To know God in a personal relationship (1 Cor 1:21; Gal 4:8–9; 1 Tim 4:16).
c. To live well for God in this world, showing our love for im (John 14:23–24; Rom 12:2; 1 Thess. 4:1–8; 2 Tim 3:16–17).
d. To experience God’s freedom, grace, peace, and hope (John 8:32; Rom 15:4; 2 Pet 1:2).
e. To give us joy (Ps 119:111).
f. To grow spiritually, rejecting the world and conforming to God’s will (Rom 12:1–2; 1 Pet 2:1–2).
g. To minister to other believers and to those who have not yet believed the gospel (Josh 1:8; 2 Tim 2:15; 3:16–17).
h. To guard ourselves from sin and error (Eph 6:11–17; 2 Pet 2:1–2; Ps 119:9).
i. To be built up as a Christian community with others in the body of Christ (Acts 20:32; Eph 4:14–16).
b. We are not reading the Bible.
i. Biblical literacy among everyone, and even church attenders, is down.
ii.
“Our biblical illiteracy hurts us personally, hurts our churches, hurts our witness, and, thus, hurts the advancement of the gospel in the world.” (p. 8)
iii. Why is biblical literacy down?
1. Reading generally is on the decline.
2. Technology may be hurting our ability to read.
3. We are distracted and overextended in our schedules.
4. We don’t know the Bible’s grand story or how its parts work.
3. What does this study attempt to do?
a. The focus of this study is to help us:
i. Read the different parts of Scripture well
ii. Read it for application to the various contexts of life

Read the Bible for Life
By George Guthrie
Reading the Bible for Transformation chapter 4
“The Bible is meant not only to inform us but also to transform us in ways that bring us closer to God and enable us to live more effectively for him.” - George Guthrie
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (James 1:22 NIV)
What is Bible application?
Challenges to application
Types of application
Steps to proper application
What is Bible application?
“The thoughtful appropriation of biblical truth to our lives”
Changing our thoughts
Changing our affections, motives, ambitions, and attitudes
Changing our actions
Out of love for God for the glory of God
Challenges to application
Application isn’t easy.
Vague, mushy, generalities that don’t really change us.
Our sinful condition makes us unreceptive to the Word.
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.
They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. (Galatians 5:17 NIV)
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (James 1:22 NIV)
Types of application
Actions
Worship and praise
Giving thanks
Change our thinking/doctrine
Meditation/mind transformation
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship. (Romans 12:1 NIV)
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2 NIV).
Steps to proper application
Not something tack on the end, but begins the moment we start reading – with a receptive heart
Flows out of sound interpretation
“We must read well to live well.”
Clarify the main point(s) and how the original audience would have applied the truth being communicated.
Think through both the similarities and differences between you and the original readers of the passage.
Think through the different contexts of your life to which the passage might apply.
Think about a specific application of the biblical truth to your life.
Concluding Reflections
Am I open to hearing what the Spirit is saying to me through the Word in ways that I need to change?
Am I characterized by making changes to my life based on God’s Word?

Luke 1:57-80 “The Mercies of God”
The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.
Zechariah’s Song
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn[a] of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him without fear
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[b]; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.

“What a Great Salvation”
1 Peter 1:10–12
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
1. Our great salvation – promised but hidden.
a. Christ revealed his coming, his sufferings, and his glory to the OT Prophets (v. 11).
b. This revelation was promised, hidden, and mysterious, such that the OT Prophets did not fully understand all of the implications or the timing of the things they were prophesying (vv. 10–11)
c. It was not for them to know all of the details of the coming of the Messiah, because they were being used as God’s servants for our benefit (vv. 10, 12).
2. Our great salvation – fulfilled and revealed (v. 12)
a. Christ has now fulfilled what the OT Prophets predicted.
b. The message of salvation through Christ is now no longer a mystery, but plainly revealed to us by the Holy Spirit in the gospel proclaimed by the apostles and prophets (v. 12).
3. Our great salvation – capturing the amazement of angels (v. 12)
a. Our salvation by grace through faith in Christ Jesus is so amazing that it captures the vested interest of the angels in heaven (v. 12).
b. We have an advantage over even the angels in heaven – angels are not redeemed and will never experience salvation through Jesus Christ.

"Joy in Suffering"
1 Peter 1:6-9
6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (NIV)
We can rejoice in the midst of suffering because of the great mercy of our God. 1 Peter 1:6
We can rejoice in the midst of suffering because it refines our faith for the glory of Christ. 1 Peter 1:7
We can rejoice in the midst of suffering because it nurtures our faith and love for Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:8
We can rejoice in the midst of suffering because it points our hope toward our final salvation. 1 Peter 1:9
We can rejoice in suffering because God intends it for our good and his glory.

"The Pastor's Job Description: Equipping the Church"
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
As the head of the Church, Christ has appointed his own leaders. (Eph 4:11)
The function of church leaders is to equip the people for ministry. (Eph 4:12)
a. The goal of church ministry is Christian unity and maturity.
i. Unity in faith and knowledge (Eph 4:13)
b. Maturity in Christ-like character (Eph 4:13)
i. Stability in sound doctrine (Eph 4:14)
ii. Maturity through mutual ministry resulting in mutual growth. (Eph 4:15-16)
Christ's plan for the church is that pastors equip all the members for ministry so that the whole church will grow in unity and maturity.
