“Reality, not the Illusion” (1 John 5:13–21)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, August 21, 2016
1 John 5:13–21 (NIV)
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
1. Real Faith (13)
2. Confident Prayer (14–15)
3. Compassionate Intercession (16–17)
4. Divine Protection (18–20)
5. Loving Exhortation (21)
Main Idea: May we have a true faith, not an illusion of faith. And may we worship the true and living God, not a fake imitation.

“Genuine Testimony” (1 John 5:1–12)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, August 14, 2016
1 John 5:1-12
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1. The Genuineness of our Testimony of Spiritual Birth (1–5).
a. The one born of God believes that Jesus is the Messiah (1, 5).
b. The one born of God loves God (1, 2, 3).
c. The one born of God loves God’s children (1, 2).
d. The one born of God keeps God’s commands (2–3).
e. The one born of God overcomes the world through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God (5).
2. The Genuineness of Christ’s Testimony as the Son of God (6–12).
a. The Three-fold Witness to the Genuineness of Christ’s Testimony (6–8):
i. The water
ii. The blood
iii. The Spirit
b. The Witness of God the Father to the Genuineness of Christ’s Testimony (9–12).

“We Love Because God Loves” (1 John 4:7–21)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, August 7, 2016
1 John 4:7–21 (NIV)
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
1. True Believers Love God and People (6–10).
2. There is an inseparable connection between God’s love for us and our love for other people (11–12).
3. There is an inseparable connection between faith in Jesus Christ and love for other people (13–16).
4. There is an inseparable connection between our love for other people and our confidence that we belong to God (17–18).
5. There is no connection whatsoever between love for God and hatred of other people (19–21).
Main Idea: “If God loves us then we will love others, because God’s love for us is transformational and effective, resulting in our love for God and for other people.”

“Acknowledging Christ” (1 John 4:1–6)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, July 31, 2016
1 John 4:1–6 (NIV)
4 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
1. God’s people must exercise discernment (1).
2. God’s people agree with the Holy Spirit’s witness regarding Jesus’ person (2–3).
3. God’s people will experience the victory of God, even though they face the world’s opposition (4–5).
4. God’s people agree with the true apostolic witness regarding Christ (6).
Main Idea: Those who belong to God and truly have God’s Spirit within them will acknowledge the truth about Jesus Christ, that He is God and Man and our Savior and Lord.

“Assurance in God’s Presence” (1 John 3:19–24)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, July 24, 2016
1 John 3:19–24 (NIV)
19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
Working through the passage in reverse:
Main overriding question: “How do we know that we belong to God?” (v. 24)
Main overriding answer: “By the Holy Spirit he has given to us” (v. 24).
Clarifying question: “How do we know that we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us?”
Clarifying answer (3 works of the Spirit): John weaves together all 3 of the main indicators that we are the children of God (vv. 23–24).
1. Faith in Jesus Christ (v. 23).
2. Obedience to the commands of Christ (v. 24).
3. Love for one another (v. 23).
*All three of these indicators are produced by the indwelling Holy Spirit. These are not human initiated, self-produced works. These are works of God.
*The presence of these three works of the Spirit provides two great benefits to us as believers:
1. Boldness/confidence in prayer (vv. 21–22; cf. 5:13–15).
2. Assurance/confidence in God’s presence when our hearts (consciences) accuse us (vv. 19–20; cf. 4:13–18).
Main Idea: “The fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives gives us confidence before the presence of God in judgment and in prayer.”

“The Mark of Love” (1 John 3:11–18)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, July 17, 2016
1 John 3:11–18 (NIV)
11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1. We have been given a clear command to love one another (11).
a. The Message: The gospel compels us to love.
b. From the beginning: From the point of conversion, love for one another is a primary act of obedience to Christ.
c. One another: Love is personal. We are to care for one another in the body of Christ.
2. The devil and the world are characterized by hatred, not love (12–15).
a. The devil is characterized by hatred and murder.
b. Cain was a child of the devil, and revealed his family resemblance when he killed his brother in anger.
i. Cain was an evildoer (1 John 3:12; Gen 4:6–7).
ii. Cain lacked faith (Heb. 11:4)
c. The world is characterized by hatred.
d. Hatred is a mark of worldliness, unbelief, the family resemblance of Satan, and confirmation that one is still in death/condemnation (14).
e. Hatred/lack of love is murder. Murderers are not children of God.
3. Christ and his church are characterized by love, not hatred (14a, 16–18).
a. Jesus Christ gave us the ultimate demonstration of love when he gave his life for ours (16).
b. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we must follow the example of Christ and give our lives for our brothers and sisters in Christ (16).
c. Our love for one another is demonstrated in real life actions, not thoughts and words only (17–18).
d. Love for one another is a clear mark that we are God’s children and disciples of Christ.
e. Love for one another gives us assurance that we have crossed over from death to life (14a).
Main Idea: Love for other people is a clear mark that we have been born into God’s family.

“Bearing the Family Resemblance” (1 John 3:4–10)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, July 10, 2016
1 John 3:4–10 (NIV)
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
1. Sin is incompatible with the righteous character of God (v. 4).
2. Sin is incompatible with the Work of Christ (v. 5)
3. Sin is incompatible with the ministry of the Holy Spirit (9–10).
Main Idea: If sin is a part of your life, then it presents evidence that you may not be a child of God. However, an attitude of repentance and growth in righteousness prevents evidence that you are a part of God’s family.

“Confidence at His Coming” (1 John 2:28–3:3)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, July 3, 2016
28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him. 1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (1 John 2:28-3:3, NIV)
1. Confidence for the day of Christ comes by abiding in Christ now (2:28).
2. Confidence for the day of Christ comes by the righteous character that is produced in us by the regenerating and indwelling Holy Spirit (2:29).
3. Confidence for the day of Christ does not ultimately rest in us, but rests in God’s love for us that has made us his children (3:1).
4. Confidence for the day of Christ comes through the development of Christlikeness that will one day be perfected at his coming (3:2).
5. In light of Christ’s coming we have a responsibility to purify ourselves and in so doing nurture a confident expectation for his return (3:3).
Big Idea: Christians can have confidence that they are in Christ now, which will lead to confidence and not shame at the future coming of Jesus Christ.

“Abiding in the Spirit and in Truth” (1 John 2:18–27)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, June 26, 2016
1 John 2:18-27, NIV
18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist-- denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us-- eternal life.
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit-- just as it has taught you, remain in him.
1. 1. Those who walk away from the faith give evidence that they were never truly God’s children (18–19).
2. 2. The anointing of the indwelling Holy Spirit is a gift from God to keep his true children from error (20–23).
3. 3. The abiding presence of the Word is a gracious gift from God to keep his true children from error.
Main Idea: The Holy Spirit and the Word are the primary means that God uses to keep his children from falling away from the faith. And those who are truly his will abide in the Spirit and in truth. So abide in Him!

“You Are What You Love” (1 John 2:15–17)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, June 12, 2016
1 John 2:15–17, NIV
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world-- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-- comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
1. You cannot love the world and God (v. 15).
2. Love for the world begins with our inner desires and a misplaced affection for the pleasures of the world (v. 16).
3. Love for the world is a fools’ errand, because it is passing away and will soon be destroyed (v. 17).
4. The only path to eternal life is through a love for God that reveals itself by obeying his will (v. 17).
Main Idea: A Christian who has truly been born again by the grace of God does not replace their love for God with a love for the world and its pleasures.

1 John 2:12–14
12 I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14 I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
1. Your sins are forgiven.
2. You know the one who is from the beginning (Jesus Christ).
3. You have overcome the evil one.
4. You know the Father.
5. You are strong.
6. The Word of God lives in you.
Main Idea: We need to remember who we are as children of God and what we have been given by grace, so that we can be motivated to live faithfully in the world and overcome it in Jesus’ name.

“The Old-New Command” (1 John 2:7–11)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, May 22, 2016
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister1 is still in the darkness. 10Anyone who loves their brother and sister1 lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. (1 John 2:7-11, NIV)
1. How can something be old and yet new (vv. 7–8)?
a. It is old…
i. because love for one another was built into our moral consciousness, being made in the image of God.
ii. because love for neighbor was a part of Israel’s Law and reiterated by Christ in the two great commands (Lev19:18; Matt 22:34–40
iii. because the command to love is a part of the Gospel (message you have heard) of Jesus that has been preached since the beginning of this new age.
b. It is new…
i. because Jesus’ self-sacrificial love has given love a new standard and example.
ii. because the new age of the age of Christ and his Spirit has come.
iii. because it is a command that is renewed every day in the life of the believer in Christ. It should never grow old or boring because it is the highest goal of Christlikeness that we can strive to attain.
2. What is one of the clearest indications that you are a Christian who is walking in the light (vv. 9–11)?
a. A person who hates is not a Christian and is still in darkness (v. 9).
i. Your life can be accompanied by a number of other righteous looking traits, but if you do not love others your religion is a fake.
ii. A person characterized by hatred of others is not a Christian and has never been a Christian (in darkness until now).
b. A person who loves others shows that he is a Christian and that he is walking in the light of God (vv. 10–11).
i. Those who walk in the light will not stumble, because there is nothing in the light to cause him to stumble (v. 10).
ii. Those who walk in darkness are blind and are prone to stumbling and falling (an image of judgment) (v. 11).
Big Idea: One of the clearest indications that you are a Christian and have the assurance of eternal life (1 John 5:13) is if you love other people.

Pastor Cameron Jungels

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. (1 John 2:3-6, NIV)
A Christian obeys the commands of God (3).Christians obey God’s Word, thus fulfilling God’s loving purpose in saving them (5).Christians model their pattern of living after that of Jesus (6)Christians have an assurance of their standing as God’s children when they demonstrate family resemblance by living as Christ did (3, 6).Those who claim to be Christians but do not live like Christians have no basis to claim that they know God. More than likely, their profession is a lie and they are not Christians at all (4).Main Idea: Christians are to live like Christians, obeying God’s commands, remaining in God’s Word, and modeling their lives after Jesus. This fulfills the purpose of God’s love in saving us and brings us assurance that we are in fact God’s children.

Pastor Cameron Jungels

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
(1 John 2:1-2, NIV)
1. Christians take sin seriously and strive diligently in the power of the Spirit to eliminate sin from their lives (1a).
2. Our salvation, though, does not rest on our ability to live a sinless life but on Christ’s perfect atoning sacrifice (1b–2).
Main Idea: Christians fight against sin in their own lives, but their trust is in Christ’s atonement to bring them home to God.

1 John 1:8–10 (NIV)
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
1. Christians do not deny the presence of sin in their lives (vv. 8, 10).
2. Christians do not deny the presence of sin in their lives; instead they openly and continually confess their sins to God (v. 9).
Big Idea: Christians do not deny the presence of sin in their lives; instead, they honestly and continually confess their sins and receive the forgiveness that has been offered to us by God through Jesus Christ.
Christians do not cover-up; they confess.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
God is pure, uncorrupted Light (v. 5).We are deceiving ourselves and others if we claim to be in fellowship with God all the while we are walking in darkness (v. 6).Walking in the light with God provides assurance that we are in fellowship with Him, with other believers, and that our sins have been forgiven (v. 7).Main Idea: We have no basis for claiming that we are in fellowship with God or that our sins have been forgiven if we are not walking in the light.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-- this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete. (1 John 1:1-4, NIV)

"A Letter for the Assurance of Faith" (1 John)
Pastor Cameron Jungels
Eastside Baptist Church
Sunday AM, April 3, 2016
1. How can I know that I am a Christian and that I am assured of eternal life with God?
a. The promises of God
b. The internal ministry/witness of the Holy Spirit
c. The fruit of the Spirit
2. The letter of 1 John is written primarily to give us a basis for our Christian assurance.
1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
3 Tests of Assurance in 1 John
a. The test of belief
b. The test of love
c. The test of obedience
Main Idea: My prayer is that this letter will draw us all into a real, living, and assured faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. This faith can be assured when we witness the presence of belief, love, and obedience in our lives by the grace of God.
