2 Kings 4:1–7 NIV
1The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” 2Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” 3Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” 5She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

Deuteronomy 10:18 NIV
18He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.
Main Idea: We can trust in God and respond with simple dependent obedience in times of need, because our almighty Father is our generous and gracious Caregiver.

“The Wisdom of Honoring Mothers” (Selections from Proverbs)Pastor Cameron JungelsEastside Baptist ChurchSunday AM, May 12, 2019 (Mother’s Day)
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exod. 20:12 NIV)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"-- which is the first commandment with a promise-- 3 "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." (Eph. 6:1–3 NIV)
1. Value Your Mother’s Instruction.
a. Listen to your mother.
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. (Prov. 1:8)
My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching. (Prov. 6:20)
Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Prov. 23:22 NIV)
The sayings of King Lemuel-- an inspired utterance his mother taught him. Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb! Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers! (Prov. 31:1–2 NIV)
b. Gain wisdom from your mother.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. (Prov. 1:7–9 NIV)
2. Benefit from Your Mother’s Instruction.
a. It will help you know God better.
My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, (Prov. 2:1 NIV)then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. (Prov. 2:5 NIV)
b. It will guide and protect you.
20 My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching. 21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. (Prov. 6:20–22 NIV)
c. It will enhance the duration and quality of your life.
My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. (Prov. 4:20 NIV)for they are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body. (Prov. 4:22 NIV)
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. (Prov. 3:1–2 NIV)
3. Respect and Honor Your Mother.
a. Foolishness brings dishonor and grief to your mother.
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. (Prov. 10:1 NIV)
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Prov. 15:20 NIV)
A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him. (Prov. 17:25 NIV)
b. Disrespect is shameful.
Whoever robs their father and drives out their mother is a child who brings shame and disgrace. (Prov. 19:26 NIV)
Whoever robs their father or mother and says, "It's not wrong," is partner to one who destroys. (Prov. 28:24 NIV)
c. Disrespect leads to arrogance and rebellion.
11 "There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers; 12 those who are pure in their own eyes and yet are not cleansed of their filth; 13 those whose eyes are ever so haughty, whose glances are so disdainful; 14 those whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are set with knives to devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among mankind. (Prov. 30:11–14 NIV)
d. Disrespect brings the judgment of God.
If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. (Prov. 20:20 NIV)
The eye that mocks a father, that scorns an aged mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures. (Prov. 30:17 NIV)
Main Idea: One of the clearest indications that someone is living in the fear of the Lord and seeking the wisdom of the Lord is that they honor their mother.

“The Genesis of Motherhood” (Selections from Genesis 1–4)Pastor Cameron JungelsEastside Baptist ChurchSunday AM, May 13, 2018
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:26–28, NIV)
1. The grand purpose of motherhood in God’s world.
2. The great pain of motherhood in a sin-cursed world.
16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (Genesis 3:16, NIV)
3. The gracious privilege of motherhood in a sin-cursed world.
20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. (Genesis 3:20–21, NIV)
1 Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. (Genesis 4:1–2, NIV)
25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord. (Genesis 4:25–26, NIV)
4. God’s gospel plan for motherhood to rescue a sin-cursed world.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15, NIV)
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:1–3, NIV)
4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. (Genesis 17:4–7, NIV)
15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” (Genesis 17:15–16, NIV)
4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. (Galatians 4:4–5, NIV)

Luke 7:11–17 (NIV)
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

1. God ordained that motherhood would be essential to fulfilling his purposes for the creation of the world and the propagation of the human race.
27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis 1:27-28, NIV)
20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. (Genesis 3:20, NIV)
2. God ordained that his means of salvation for sinners would come through motherhood.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3:15, NIV)
4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. (Gal. 4:4-5, NIV)
3. God ordained that godly motherhood is crucial to the spiritual well-being of the family.
8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. (Prov. 1:8, NIV)
15 A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. (Prov. 29:15, NIV)
The sayings of King Lemuel-- an inspired utterance his mother taught him. (Prov. 31:1, NIV)
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (2 Timothy 1:5, NIV)
4. God ordained that mothers are to be loved by their husbands with a self-sacrificing love.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (Eph. 5:25, NIV)
28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. (Eph. 5:28, NIV)
5. God ordained that mothers are to be honored and obeyed by their children.
16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Deut. 5:16, NIV)
16 "Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!" (Deut. 27:16, NIV)
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. (Prov. 10:1, NIV)
22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Prov. 23:22, NIV)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"-- which is the first commandment with a promise-- 3 "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." (Eph. 6:1-3, NIV)
6. God ordained that he would receive glory through motherhood and especially through godly Christian mothers who love and faithfully serve their families for the Lord.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:16, NIV)

“Hannah’s Prayer” (1 Samuel 1:1–2:10)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/May 10, 2015 Sunday AM
1 Samuel 1:1–2:10 (NIV)
The Birth of Samuel
1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”
17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”
18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”
Hannah Dedicates Samuel
21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”
23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts.
8 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.
“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9 He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.
“It is not by strength that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
1. Hannah was an oppressed woman.2. Hannah was a hurting woman.3. Hannah was a misunderstood woman.4. Hannah was a faithful, worshiping woman.5. Hannah was a praying woman.6. Hannah was a vindicated woman.7. Hannah was a blessed woman.Main Idea: God comes to the aid of his faithful, worshiping people and vindicates them in their time of need. He remembers his covenant promises to Abraham and provides divinely appointed leadership (Samuel) to guide them into faithfulness to his will.
