"False Teachers and the Love of Money" (1 Timothy 6:3-10)
Wednesday May 27, 2015
Wednesday May 27, 2015
1 Timothy 6:1–10 (NIV)
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

“Honor and Discipline of Elders” (1 Timothy 5:17–25)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist Church/May 13, 2015, Wednesday PM“As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith.” (1 Timothy 1:3–4, NIV) “They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.” (1 Timothy 1:7–8, NIV) “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.” (1 Timothy 4:1–5, NIV)
1 Timothy 5:17–25 (NIV)
17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
1. Pastors are to be paid for their ministry of preaching and teaching (vv. 17–18)2. Purposeful care should be exercised in the discipline of pastors in the church (vv. 19–21).a. A pastor should only be disciplined when there is proper substantiating evidence (v. 19).b. When there is evidence to substantiate an accusation, then the pastor must be disciplined before the entire congregation so as to promote holiness (v. 20).c. Discipline of pastors needs to be handled fairly and without partiality (v. 21).3. Churches must exercise care in the ordination and selection of pastors (5:22–25).Main Idea: If the church is going to be holy, then it must also have holy leadership.

As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to. So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.” (1 Timothy 5:9–16, NIV) Lessons:⦁ Use God’s resources wisely⦁ Maintain the reputation of the church⦁ Maintain a consistent Christian character⦁ Serve others as we have opportunity⦁ Use our time and our words wiselyMain Idea: We need to be Christians whose lives match our professions.

“Care for Widows” (1 Timothy 5:3–8)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/April 29, 2015““Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless. “If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest. If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset, because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.” (Exodus 22:22–27, NIV) “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” (James 1:27, NIV) “Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy 5:3–8, NIV) “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” (1 John 4:20–21, NIV) Main Idea: Christians should be characterized by mercy.“Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.” (1 Thessalonians 3:10–12, NIV)

3:1–13 (NIV)

Here is a trustworthy
saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now
the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate,
self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not
given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of
money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his
children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. 5 (If
anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of
God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may
become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He
must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into
disgrace and into the devil’s trap.
8 In
the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging
in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep
hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They
must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve
as deacons.
11 In
the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but
temperate and trustworthy in everything.
12 A
deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his
household well. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent
standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
Main Idea: The
needs of the church of Jesus Christ must be met by faithful servants who are
mature examples of the Christian faith.
The
deacon’s responsibility (v.8).
A deacon is a servant.
i.
Diakanos means servant.
ii.
In one sense all
Christians are servants.
iii.
Deacons in the technical
sense are a specifically called out group of people who are given
responsibility in the church to serve various needs within the congregation.
iv.
The area of service is
determined by the needs of the congregation.
A deacon is not necessarily a teacher.
A deacon is not an overseer.
The
deacon’s qualifications (vv. 8-12).
Personal Character
Spiritual Life
Christian Service
Moral Purity
Home Life
Qualifications for “women.”

Main Idea: The church of Jesus Christ must be led by men who are morally
qualified to be examples to the flock and who have been gifted by God with the necessary
abilities to shepherd the flock.
The
oversight of the church is scripturally entrusted to
elders/pastors/overseers.
Elders
must be male.
Overseer/elder/shepherd/pastor
all refer to the same office in the NT.
The
pastoral office in the NT church is a good and noble work that men should
aspire to.
The NT
pattern appears to be more than one elder in each church.
The
pastoral office is reserved for men who have attained a high degree of
moral character and the necessary abilities for feeding and leading God’s
flock.

I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or
disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with
decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or
gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds,
appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11 A
woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do
not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be
quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And
Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a
sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they
continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in
God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and
foundation of the truth. (1 Tim. 3:15, NIV)
Main Idea: God has designed and ordered his church to be led by male elders
and teachers.
Christian
women demonstrate their godliness by learning in the church with a quiet
and submissive spirit (11).
Christian
women remain true to their God-given femininity by submitting to male
leadership in the church (12–14).
Christian
women demonstrate their sanctification when they embrace their
God-ordained feminine roles (15).

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,

kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in
all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our
Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a
knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator
between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave
himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the
proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald
and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful

“A Hard Lesson” (1 Timothy 1:18–20)
1
Timothy: Honoring Christ in the Church, Message 5
Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/February 4, 2015
18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the
prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the
battle well, 19 holding on to
faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered
shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be
taught not to blaspheme. (1 Tim.
1:18-20, NIV)
3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that
you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 or to devote themselves to myths
and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather
than advancing God's work-- which is by faith.
5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure
heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some have departed from these
and have turned to meaningless talk. 7
They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking
about or what they so confidently affirm. (1 Tim. 1:3-7, NIV)
14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the
body of elders laid their hands on you. (1 Tim. 4:14, NIV)
5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good
conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Tim. 1:5, NIV)
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of
a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father's
wife. 2 And you are proud!
Shouldn't you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your
fellowship the man who has been doing this?
3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am
with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already
passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing
this. 4 So when you are
assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is
present, 5 hand this man over
to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on
the day of the Lord. (1 Co. 5:1-5, NIV)
Main Idea: Sin, even great sin, in the life
of the believer may result in restoration, but there must be full repentance.

1 Timothy
1:12–17 (NIV)
12 I
thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me
trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was
once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because
I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was
poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ
Jesus.
15 Here
is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into
the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for
that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ
Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would
believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King
eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and
ever. Amen.
Main Idea: Our salvation is owed completely to the grace of Jesus Christ.
When we
truly understand the grace of Christ our lives will be characterized by
gratitude (12).
When we truly understand the grace of Christ
Jesus, we will gain a clearer sense of the reality of our depravity.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." (Lk. 19:10,
NIV)
When we truly understand the grace of Christ
Jesus, we will desire to see our lives as instruments of the Christ’s
grace to those who are still in need of salvation.
When we truly understand the grace of Christ
Jesus, we will want to burst forth into praise and worship of our glorious
God.

1:1–11 (NIV) Paul,
an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus
our hope,
2 To Timothy my true son in the faith:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the
Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers
3 As
I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may
command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 or
to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote
controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. 5 The
goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good
conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some have departed from these
and have turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers
of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so
confidently affirm. 8 We
know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also
know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels,
the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their
fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral,
for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and
perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that
conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he
entrusted to me.
Ephesians
2:11–20 (NIV) Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ
11 Therefore,
remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised”
by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by
human hands)—12 remember that at that time you were separate
from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the
covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But
now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the
blood of Christ. 14 For
he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the
barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in
his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create
in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and
in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put
to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you
who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For
through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
19 Consequently,
you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s
people and also members of his household, 20 built on the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief
cornerstone.
8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. (1 Tim. 1:8, NIV)
The Law of Moses is good and has a proper use
in the New Covenant Age.
In order for the Law of Moses to fulfill its
proper use in the New Covenant age, it must be used properly.
Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor's
crown except by competing according to the rules. (2 Tim. 2:5, NIV)
The Law is used lawfully when it takes into
account its intended purpose.
9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for
lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for
those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for
those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers-- (1
Tim. 1:9-10, NIV)
The Law is used lawfully when it takes into
account its relationship to the glorious gospel of Christ.
and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel
concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. (1 Tim. 1:10-11, NIV)
The Law is used lawfully when it takes into
account its proper place in the plan of redemption.
24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified
by faith. 25 Now that this
faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. (Gal. 3:24-25, NIV)
Main Idea: The Law of Moses has a
proper place in the life of the New Covenant believer when it is used in
harmony with its intended purpose and in harmony with the gospel of Christ.

1 Timothy 1:1–8 (NIV) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by
the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 To
Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and
peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers
3 As I urged you
when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command
certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 or to
devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.
8 We know that the
law is good if one uses it properly.
