“Be of the Same Mind” (Romans 12:15–16)
Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/July 23, 2014
“Rejoice
with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one
another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.” (Romans 12:15–16, NIV)
1. Be of the same mind (way of thinking) by
sharing in the emotions of one another (v. 15).
“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who
mourn.” (Romans 12:15, NIV)
Parallel
Passages:
Job
30:25
| Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the
poor?
1 Co 12:26 | If one part
suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part
rejoices with it.
Heb 13:3 | Continue to
remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those
who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
2. Be of the same mind (way of thinking) by
sharing status/position with one another (v. 16).
NIV Romans 12:16 Live in harmony
with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of
low position. Do not be conceited. (Romans 12:16, NIV)
CEB Romans 12:16 Consider everyone
as equal, and don't think that you're better than anyone else. Instead,
associate with people who have no status. Don't think that you're so smart.
(Romans 12:16, CEB)
Parallel Passages:
“Therefore if you have any encouragement from being
united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the
Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value
others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to
the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the
same mindset as Christ Jesus:” (Philippians 2:1–5, NIV)
“My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious
Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your
meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old
clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine
clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You
stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among
yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers and
sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be
rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? But
you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are
they not the ones who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who
are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong? If you really keep
the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are
doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law
as lawbreakers. For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one
point is guilty of breaking all of it. For he who said, “You shall not commit
adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but
do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. Speak and act as those who are
going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without
mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over
judgment.” (James 2:1–13, NIV)

“God to the Rescue” (Psalm 107)
Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/July 20, 2014 1. Those who have been delivered by God
give him thanks (vv. 1–3).
“Give thanks to the Lord,
for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed
from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west,
from north and south.” (Psalm 107:1–3, NIV)
Hymn # 544: “Redeemed, How I Love to
Proclaim It”
2. Those who have been delivered by God
tell their stories (vv. 4–32).
a. Wanderers in the Desert (vv. 4–9). “Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to
a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives
ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord
in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a
straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his
wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry
with good things.” (Psalm 107:4–9, NIV)
b. Prisoners (vv. 10–16).“Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners
suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and
despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they
stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them
from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and
broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for
mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.”
(Psalm 107:10–16, NIV) For his anger
lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the
night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5, NIV)
c. Sick People (vv. 17–22).“Some became fools through their rebellious ways and
suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew
near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord
in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word
and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his
wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his
works with songs of joy.” (Psalm 107:17–22, NIV) d. Sailors on the Sea (vv. 23–32).“Some went out on the sea in ships; they were
merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted
up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage
melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’
end. Then they cried out to the Lord
in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the
storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it
grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to
the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the
people and praise him in the council of the elders.” (Psalm 107:23–32, NIV)
Hymn
# 69: “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”
3. Those who have been delivered by God
praise his glorious name (vv. 33–42).“He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into
thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness
of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the
parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and
they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted
vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers
greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers
decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who
pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted
the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The
upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.” (Psalm
107:33–42, NIV)
Hymn
# 213: “We Will Glorify”
4. Those who have been delivered by God
apply their hearts to wisdom (v. 43).
“Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder
the loving deeds of the Lord.”
(Psalm 107:43, NIV)
The upright see
and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. (Psalm 107:42,
NIV)
Let the redeemed
of the LORD tell their story-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, (Psalm 107:2, NIV) Hymn:

“The Mystery of Suffering and a
Compassionate Savior” (John 9:1–7)Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/July 20, 2014
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As
he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples
asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born
blind?” 3 “Neither
this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the
works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day,
we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After
saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it
on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of
Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home
seeing.
1. The Mystery of Suffering
a. Why
do bad things happen to us? What is the cause?
i.
Reject: The Open View of God
ii.
Reject: A rigid view of God’s justice and
righteousness that attributes all suffering to some sin.
iii.
Accept: A multi-faceted understanding of
suffering and God’s sovereignty that leaves room for mystery and faith.
iv.
Conclusion: Suffering is mysterious. God
is sovereign. God is both aware of and in control of the events of this world. Somehow
in a way that is mysterious and incomprehensible to us, God uses pain and
suffering to accomplish his purposes in this world.
We cannot always explain the reason for
our pain, but we can rely on a compassionate Savior.
2. The Compassion of a Savior
a. Jesus
came to minister to us in the midst of our suffering.
Luke
4:14–21:
14 Jesus
returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread
through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their
synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He
went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went
into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and
the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the
place where it is written: 18 “The
Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because
he has anointed me
to
proclaim good news to the poor.
He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and
recovery of sight for the blind,
to
set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s
favor.”
20 Then
he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes
of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began
by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
b. Jesus
has compassion on those who are suffering.
c. Jesus
is diligent and careful in using his time, knowing that there is limited
opportunity to minister to others.
4 As
long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming,
when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light
of the world.” (John 9:4–5)
“If
anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for
them.” (James 4:17, NIV)
d.
Jesus entered into our suffering by
humbling himself as one of us and taking our curse upon himself.
e.
Jesus death, resurrection, and ascension
to heaven guarantees the full and final redemption of this sin-cursed world.
Main Idea: Suffering is often unexplainable, mysterious, and difficult, but we
have a Savior who is full of compassion for those who follow him.

“Blessing Your Persecutors” (Romans
12:14)Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/July 16, 2014
“Bless
those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” (Romans
12:14, NIV)
1. The Circumstances of Persecution
2. The Response to Persecution
a.
A self-control that does not respond in kind
with curses or ill-will or violence.
b.
A willingness to offer blessing to our
persecutors.
“Then he fell
on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he
had said this, he fell asleep.” (Acts 7:60, NIV)
“We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed,
we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;” (1 Corinthians 4:12, NIV)
3. The Teaching and Example of Christ in
Persecution
a.
Jesus’ Teaching
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of
righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when
people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you
because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for
in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew
5:10–12, NIV)
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those
who persecute you,” (Matthew 5:44, NIV)
“bless those who curse you, pray for those who
mistreat you.” (Luke 6:28, NIV)
b.
Jesus’ Example
c.
A Call to Walk in His Steps
“But
how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure
it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable
before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving
you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and
no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he
did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted
himself to him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:20–23, NIV)
4. The Motivation for the Proper Response
in Persecution
a.
A supreme love for God, his truth and his glorious name.
b.
A genuine love for other people, including our enemies.
c.
A faith
that believes in deferred, final justice from God.
d.
A grace
that transforms our hearts to be capable of doing what would otherwise be
humanly impossible.

“The Mediator”
(Topical)Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/July 13, 2014
1.
Longing for a
Mediator
Now Eli, who was
very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they
slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, "Why
do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of
yours. 24 No, my sons; the
report I hear spreading among the LORD's people is not good. 25If one person sins against another, God may mediate for the
offender; but if anyone sins against the LORD, who will intercede for
them?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke,
for it was the LORD's will to put them to death. (1 Sam. 2:22-25, NIV)
21 "Although I am blameless, I have
no concern for myself; I despise my own life.
22 It is all the same; that is why I say, 'He destroys both
the blameless and the wicked.' 23
When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent. 24 When a land falls into the
hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is
it? 25 "My days are
swifter than a runner; they fly away without a glimpse of joy. 26 They skim past like boats of
papyrus, like eagles swooping down on their prey. 27 If I say, 'I will forget my
complaint, I will change my expression, and smile,' 28 I still dread all my sufferings,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.
29 Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in
vain? 30 Even if I washed
myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder, 31 you would plunge me into a
slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me. 32 "He is not a mere mortal
like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in
court. 33 If only there were someone to mediate between us,
someone to bring us together, 34
someone to remove God's rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no
more. 35 Then I would
speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot. (Job 9:21-35, NIV)
2. Anticipating the Mediator
Abraham – Gen 18
Moses – Exod 32-33
Daniel – Daniel 9
3. The Coming of the Mediator
I urge, then,
first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made
for all people-- 2 for kings
and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness. 3
This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge
of the truth. 5 For there is
one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for
all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was
appointed a herald and an apostle-- I am telling the truth, I am not lying--
and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. (1 Tim. 2:1-7, NIV)

“Pride and
Providence” (Genesis 11:1–32) Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM June 29, 2014
1.
What is the Problem
with the People at Babel?
·
The Problem
with the People at Babel was Pride.
i.
The Pride of Rebellion
ii.
The Pride of Autonomous
Human Effort
iii.
The Pride of Arrogance
and Glory-Seeking
·
God’s Response
to the Problem of human Pride is judgment and humiliation. – God
humbles the proud but exalts the lowly and humble.
Transition:
We are still in need of redemption because our pride, arrogance, and rebellion
brings the just wrath of God.
2.
What is the Purpose
of the List of People?
·
The Purpose of
the List of People at the end of Genesis 11 is to show us the Providence
of God in the outworking of his covenant Plan of redemption.
Main Idea: In our humanity, we are prone to pride, selfish
glory-seeking, and a desire for autonomy from God. Our holy God must judge this
pride and rebellion. But in his holy love, he has also providentially provided
for our redemption through his plan to bring a Deliverer-Messiah-Savior into
the world through the line of Shem and Abraham.

“Before Abraham Was, I AM” (John 8:48–59)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun
AM/June 29, 2014 1.
Jesus gives eternal life (that begins now) to everyone who
keeps his word.
“Very
truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”” (John 8:51,
NIV)
““Lord,”
Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to
her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise
again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the
resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though
they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe
this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son
of God, who is to come into the world.”” (John 11:21–27, NIV)
““Very
truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has
eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
(John 5:24, NIV)
2.
Jesus can give eternal life to those who keep his word,
because he is the Ever-Living One, the Great “I AM,” and the source of all
life.
““Very
truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this,
they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from
the temple grounds.” (John 8:58–59, NIV)
“Moses
said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your
fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what
shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I
am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” God
also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the
name you shall call me from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3:13–15,
NIV)
“Some
of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and
leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up
offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married
a woman and died childless. The second and then the third married her, and in
the same way the seven died, leaving no children. Finally, the woman died too.
Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were
married to her?” Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in
marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come
and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in
marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are
God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account
of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the
Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is
not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.””
(Luke 20:27–38, NIV)
“Then
he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and
the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look
at God.” (Exodus 3:6, NIV)
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be
steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in
the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV)

“Lord of All the Nations” (Genesis
10:1–32)Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sunday PM/June 22, 2014
10 This
is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons
after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth:
Gomer,
Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras.
3 The sons of Gomer:
Ashkenaz,
Riphath and Togarmah.
4 The sons of Javan:
Elishah,
Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites. 5 (From these the
maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their
nations, each with its own language.)
6 The sons of Ham:
Cush,
Egypt, Put and Canaan.
7 The sons of Cush:
Seba,
Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.
The sons of Raamah:
Sheba
and Dedan.
8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who
became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter
before the Lord; that is why it is
said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”
10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad
and Kalneh, in Shinar. 11 From that land he went to
Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah 12 and
Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.13 Egypt was the father of
the
Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites,
Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites. 15 Canaan was the father of
Sidon
his firstborn, and of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites,
Amorites, Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites,
Zemarites and Hamathites.
Later the Canaanite clans scattered 19 and
the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then
toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.
20 These
are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and
nations.
21 Sons
were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor
of all the sons of Eber.22 The sons of Shem:
Elam,
Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.
23 The sons of Aram:
Uz,
Hul, Gether and Meshek.
24 Arphaxad was the father of Shelah,
and
Shelah the father of Eber.
25 Two sons were born to Eber:
One
was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was
named Joktan.
26 Joktan was the father of Almodad,
Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal,
Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were
sons of Joktan. 30 The region where they lived stretched
from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.
31 These
are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and
nations. 32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons,
according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the
nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
“From one
man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he
marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.”
(Acts 17:26, NIV) God is sovereign over the nations.
“When the
Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he
set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of
Israel.” (Deuteronomy 32:8, NIV)
God scattered the nations throughout the
earth.
God singled out a nation on which to bestow
his grace.God has purposed to save people from every nation
through his grace to his chosen nation.
“The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your
country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your
name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and
whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed
through you.”” (Genesis 12:1–3, NIV)
“But you
are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of
darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are
the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received
mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9–10, NIV)
“And they
sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its
seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them
to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the
earth.”” (Revelation 5:9–10, NIV)
Main Idea: It is through God’s
grace to one nation that all of the nations of the world have been blessed.

Sunday Jun 22, 2014
“Before
Abraham Was, I AM” (John 8:48-59), Part 1 Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 22,
2014 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love
me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why
is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You
belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s
desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for
there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he
is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the
truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty
of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God.”
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you
are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my
Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for
myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very
truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know
that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say
that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you
greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you
think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing.
My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though
you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like
you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father
Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and
you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was
born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,
but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. (John 8:42–59, niv)
30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him. 31 To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are
really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the
truth will set you free.” (John 8:30–32, niv)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my
brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will
give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the
resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The
one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and
whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the
Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11:21–27, niv)
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes
him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over
from death to life. (John 5:24, niv)
Main Idea: Jesus gives eternal life that begins now to everyone who
keeps his Word.

“The
Legacy of a Godly Father” (Deuteronomy 6:1–9)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 15,
2014
“A good person leaves an inheritance for
their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the
righteous.” (Proverbs 13:22, NIV) Godly fathers leave a spiritual inheritance
to their children and their grandchildren (Deut 6:1–3).
“These are the commands, decrees and laws
the Lord your God directed me to
teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by
keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy
long life. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you
and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just
as the Lord, the God of your
ancestors, promised you.” (Deuteronomy 6:1–3, NIV)
Godly fathers leave a spiritual inheritance
by loving God with all their heart, soul, and strength (Deut 6:4–5).
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4–5, NIV)
Godly fathers leave a spiritual inheritance
by demonstrating that love for God by obeying his commands (Deut 6:1–3,
6).
“These are the commands, decrees and laws
the Lord your God directed me to
teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by

long life. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you
and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just
as the Lord, the God of your
ancestors, promised you.” (Deuteronomy 6:1–3, NIV)
“These commandments that I give you today
are to be on your hearts.” (Deuteronomy 6:6, NIV)
Godly fathers leave a spiritual inheritance
by saturating all of life with the truth of God’s Word (Deut 6:7–9).
“These commandments that I give you today
are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when
you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when
you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

“The Consequences of Sin” (Genesis 9:18-29)Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/June 8, 2014
Prologue The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were
Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) These were the three
sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole
earth. (Genesis 9:18–19, NIV)
The
Committing of Sin
Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a
vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered
inside his tent. (Genesis 9:20-21, NIV)
Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father
naked and told his two brothers outside. (Genesis 9:22, NIV)
The
Covering of Sin
But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid
it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their
father's naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would
not see their father naked. (Genesis 9:23, NIV)
The
Consequences of Sin
When Noah awoke from his wine and found out
what his youngest son had done to him, he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The
lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." (Genesis 9:24-25, NIV)
The
Grace of God
He also said, "Praise be to the LORD,
the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend Japheth's
territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave
of Japheth." (Genesis 9:26–27, NIV)
Epilogue
After the flood Noah lived 350 years. Noah
lived a total of 950 years, and then he died. (Genesis 9:28-29, NIV)
Main IdeaØ Our
only hope to be delivered from the consequences of sin is through the grace of
God.

“Who
Is Your Father?” (John 8:37-47)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 8, 2014
30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold
to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have
never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is
a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets
you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are
Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you
have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen
in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your
father.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said
Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you
are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard
from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the
works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,”
they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love
me, for I have come here from God.
The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God.” (John 8:30–47, niv)
Whether or not
you are a child of God cannot be determined by your physical parents or
ancestry.
They
answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" (John 8:33, NIV)
I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. (John 8:37, NIV)
I
am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you are doing
what you have heard from your father. “(John 8:38, NIV)
"Abraham
is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children,"
said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did. (John 8:39, NIV)
As
it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth
that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. (John 8:40, NIV)
It
is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from
Israel are Israel. (Romans 9:6, NIV)
Nor
because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the
contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
(Romans 9:7, NIV)
In
other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God's children,
but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.
(Romans 9:8, NIV)
What
then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses, "I
will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have
compassion." (Romans 9:14-15, NIV)
It
does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God's mercy.
(Romans 9:16, NIV)
A child of God
is supernaturally, spiritually fathered by God by means of the new birth.
Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God." (John 8:47, NIV)
Yet
to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the
right to become children of God– (John 1:12, NIV)
children
born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but
born of God. (John 1:13, NIV)
Jesus
answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless they are born of water and the Spirit. (John 3:5, NIV)
Flesh
gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be
surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' (John 3:6-7, NIV)
The
wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the
Spirit." (John 3:8, NIV)
A child of God
hears and believes the Word of God.
I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. (John 8:37, NIV)
Why
is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
(John 8:43, NIV)
Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God." (John 8:47, NIV)
If
anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in
God. (1 John 4:15, NIV)
Everyone
who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God (1 John 5:1, NIV)
We
accept human testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the
testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. (1 John 5:9, NIV)
Whoever
believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God
has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God
has given about his Son. (1 John 5:10, NIV)
And
this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his
Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does
not have life. (1 John 5:11-12, NIV)
A child of God
recognizes and loves the members of his own family.
Jesus
said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come
here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. (John 8:42, NIV)
Everyone
who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves
the father loves his child as well. (1 John 5:1, NIV)
Dear
friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves
has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God,
because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8, NIV)
Dear
friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has
ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made
complete in us. (1 John 4:11-12, NIV)
A child of God
bears the family resemblance with a life that is increasingly conforming
to the will of the Heavenly Father.
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching,
you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free."(John 8:31-32, NIV)
"Abraham
is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children,"
said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did. (John 8:39, NIV)
As
it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth
that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. (John 8:40, NIV)
You
are doing the works of your own father." "We are not illegitimate
children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God
himself." (John 8:41, NIV)
But
you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no
sin. (1 John 3:5, NIV)
No
one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either
seen him or known him. (1 John 3:6, NIV)
Dear
children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is
righteous, just as he is righteous. (1 John 3:7, NIV)
The
one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning
from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the
devil's work. (1 John 3:8, NIV)
No
one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in
them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. (1 John
3:9, NIV)
This
is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil
are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is anyone who
does not love their brother and sister. (1 John 3:10, NIV)
Main Idea: A child of God is known not by any claim to physical
ancestry; a child of God is known by their hearing the Word of God, believing
in Jesus Christ, loving the family of God, and growing in Christlike behavior.

“The Covenant-Making God” (Genesis 9:8-17)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/June 1, 2014 “Then
God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with
you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was
with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came
out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant
with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood;
never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is
the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living
creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my
rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and
the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in
the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living
creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy
all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and
remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every
kind on the earth.” So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I
have established between me and all life on the earth.”” (Genesis 9:8–17,
NIV)
God graciously
initiated a covenant with Noah.
God’s covenant
with Noah results in blessings for every creature.
God’s covenant
with Noah is faithfully kept and maintained by God himself.
God’s covenant
with Noah is an everlasting covenant.
God’s covenant
with Noah was sealed with a sign.
God’s covenant
with Noah serves as a model for all of his gracious covenants.Main
Idea

“Truth and Freedom” (John 8:31–38)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 1, 2014John 8:21–3821 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will
look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.” 22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why
he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?” 23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You
are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that
you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed
die in your sins.” 25 “Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from
the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in
judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from
him I tell the world.” 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his
Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak
just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is
with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even
as he spoke, many believed in him. 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold
to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have
never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is
a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets
you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are
Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you
have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen
in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your
father.”
A true disciple
of Jesus remains with him and abides in his teachings. To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching,
you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free." (John 8:31-32, NIV) Now
while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs
he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself
to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind,
for he knew what was in each person. (John 2:23–25, NIV) The
Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to
you-- they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do
not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not
believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, "This is why I told
you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them." From
this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (John
6:63–66, NIV) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32, NIV) Jesus
replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now
a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:34-36, NIV)
A true disciple
of Jesus has been set free from the bondage of sin and demonstrates the
enjoyment of that freedom in holiness.Romans 6:1–236 What
shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By
no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or
don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we
will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For
we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin
might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—7 because
anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also
live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from
the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The
death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to
God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to
God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your
mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer
any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer
yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer
every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For
sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but
under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but
under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer
yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you
obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience,
which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that,
though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the
pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You
have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19 I am using an example from everyday life because of your
human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity
and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to
righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to
sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What
benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those
things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness,
and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is
death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" (John 8:33, NIV) I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in
the Father's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father."
(John 8:37–38, NIV) The
one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning
from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the
devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's
seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of
God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of
the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is
anyone who does not love their brother and sister. (1 John 3:8–10, NIV) Dear
friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves
has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8, NIV) In
fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not
burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory
that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:3-4, NIV) We
know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of
God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. (1 John 5:18, NIV) Main
IdeaØ
A true child of God and disciple of Jesus remains with
their new Master, abides in his truth, and uses their freedom from the bondage
of sin to progress in holiness.

“Family Love &
Deferential Honor”Pastor Cameron/Wed PM/May 28, 2014
9 Love
must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another
above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep
your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the
Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:9–12, niv)
1.
Love each other like the members of
your family (v. 10a). 2.
Consider other people higher than
yourselves by treating them with honor (v. 10b).

“A Matter of Life and
Death” (John 8:21–30)Pastor
Cameron/Eastside Baptist/Sunday AM/May 25, 201412 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the
light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will
have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as
your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my
testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you
have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You
judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if
I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the
Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the
testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am one who testifies
for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”
Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 He
spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the
offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will
look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why
he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You
are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that
you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed
die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from
the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in
judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from
him I tell the world.”
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his
Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak
just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is
with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even
as he spoke, many believed in him.(John 8:12–30, niv)
1.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you cannot go to be with God (v. 21).
2.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you will die unforgiven and be punished forever for your sins (vv.
23–24).
3.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you are unaware of your blindness and oblivious to your own eternal
condemnation (vv. 22, 23, 25, 27).
4.
The crucifixion,
resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus will declare his true identity as the
Messiah and divine Son of God, confirming the condemnation of those who do not
believe him (vv. 28–29).
5.
If you believe in Jesus,
you accept the truth of his words and find life and true freedom (v. 30 [with
vv. 31–32]).
Main Idea: Recognizing the
true identity of Jesus of Nazareth is a matter of life and death. If you
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God you find eternal life, but if
you reject him, you will receive eternal death.
