“Knowing God” (Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/Feb. 19, 2014)
Lesson 6: “The Greatness of God”
The Attributes of God
v God’s attributes are his essential characteristics or the necessary parts of his nature.
v God’s attributes can be classified according to those of his greatness and those of his goodness.
The Attributes of God’s Greatness
v God’s attributes of greatness have to do with those qualities that are God’s and God’s alone.
v Human Beings can in no way emulate or copy these.
v God’s attributes of greatness are his qualities of infinity.
1. God is self-existent.
God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" (Exod. 3:14 NIV)
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. (Jn. 5:26 NIV)
2. God is perfect.
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. (Deut. 32:4 NIV)
3. God is all-powerful.
Power in Creation
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. (Ps. 33:6–9 NIV)
Power in Control of History
From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. (Acts 17:26 NIV)
For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God's words are fulfilled. (Rev. 17:17 NIV)
Sovereignty in Lives of People
"I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. (Job 42:2-3 NIV)
4. God is all-knowing.
Complete Knowledge of Creation
He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. (Ps. 147:4 NIV)
Knowledge of Potential Events
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. (Matt. 11:21 NIV)
Knowledge of Smallest Details
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Matt. 10:30 NIV)
Knowledge and God’s Will
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Matt. 10:29-30 NIV)
Knowledge of Past, Present, Future
Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.' From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do. (Isa. 46:9–11 NIV)
5. God is all-present.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (Ps. 139:7 NIV)
"But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! (1 Ki. 8:27 NIV)
6. God is all-wise.
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?" For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. (Rom. 11:33–36 NIV)
7. God is eternal.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Ps. 90:1-2 NIV)
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." (Rev. 1:8 NIV)
8. God is unchanging.
But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Ps. 33:11 NIV)
"I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. (Mal. 3:6 NIV)
