Knowing God - Lesson 2 - The Person of God - Cameron Jungles - Wed PM 1/15/14
“Knowing God” Lesson 2: “The Person of God”
1. God is a Person.
* God is Spirit.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." (Jn. 4:24, NIV)
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. (Jn. 1:18, NIV)
* God is Living.
But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath. (Jer. 10:10, NIV)
* God is Intelligent.
By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. (Prov. 3:19-20, NIV)
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! (Rom. 11:33, NIV)
* God is Purposeful.
This is the plan determined for the whole world; this is the hand stretched out over all nations. For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back? (Isa. 14:26-27, NIV)
From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do. (Isa. 46:11, NIV)
* God is Active.
In his defense Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working." (Jn. 5:17, NIV)
for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (Phil. 2:13, NIV)
* God is Free.
All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: "What have you done?" (Dan. 4:35, NIV)
* God is Self-Conscious.
God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" (Exod. 3:14, NIV)
* God is Emotional.
The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. (Ps. 145:8, NIV)
2. Why is the fact that God is a person significant?
* The Personality of God gives significance to prayer.
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matt. 6:7-8, NIV)
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Pet. 5:7, NIV)
* The Personality of God gives significance to worship.
"With whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared? Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it. They lift it to their shoulders and carry it; they set it up in its place, and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move. Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer; it cannot save them from their troubles. (Isa. 46:5–7, NIV)
* The Personality of God gives significance to service.
To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me. (Col. 1:29, NIV)
