Review• Live as God’s exiles in a hostile world (2:11-4:11).
As good citizens (2:13-17).
As obedient slaves (2:18-25).
As faithful husbands and wives 3:1-7).
Live as God’s People in the Home• Wives should be submissive and respectful to their husbands;
• husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives…
• …for the sake of the Gospel.
Wives Living for the Gospel• In Respectful Submission
• As a Witness to the Gospel
• In Inner Beauty of Character
• Following the Example of Godly Women of Faith
1 Peter 3:1-2 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
Biblical Submission of Wives• Based on the Created Order, Genesis 2:7 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
1 Timothy 2:12-13 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
Biblical Submission of Wives• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Biblical Submission of Wives• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
• Finds an analogy in the submission of Christ to the Father.
John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Biblical Submission of Wives• Based on the Created Order
• Does not indicate inferiority of being, dignity, or worth.
• Finds an analogy in the submission of Christ to the Father.
• For the purpose of fulfilling God-given roles.
1 Corinthians 12:18-21 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"
1 Corinthians 12:25-27 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
Purpose of Submission• Why does Peter instruct wives to live in respect and submission to their husbands?
• So that they can serve as a witness to the gospel through their behavior.
1 Peter 3:1-2 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
A wordless gospel?• Peter instructs wives to win over their husbands to the gospel “without a word.”
• The gospel message is necessary for salvation, but these Christian wives can “adorn” the gospel with their godly conduct.
Romans 10:14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Titus 2:9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,
Titus 2:10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
Wives Living for the Gospel• In Respectful Submission
• As a Witness to the Gospel
• In Inner Beauty of Character
1 Peter 3:3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
1 Peter 3:4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

1 Peter 3:5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,
1 Peter 3:6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

• husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives…

1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
Husbands Living for the Gospel• Considerate and Respectful
• In Honor of Wife’s God-Given Characteristics and Role
• Heirs Together of Grace of Eternal Life
• For the Sake of Your Prayers
James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
God’s Pattern Corrupted • God’s ideal pattern for loving male leadership and respectful female submission was corrupted by the Fall. Genesis 3:16 To the woman he said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Genesis 4:6-7 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." Genesis 3:16 (NLT) Then he said to the woman, "I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you." God’s Pattern Corrupted • God’s ideal pattern for loving male leadership and respectful female submission was corrupted by the Fall. • But through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God’s pattern for a holy home can be reclaimed. Live as God’s People in the Home • Wives should be submissive and respectful to their husbands; • husbands should be considerate, respectful, and loving to their wives… • …for the sake of the Gospel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cameron Jungels Eastside Baptist Church January 6, 2012 Sunday AM Unless otherwise noted, the verses are in NIV.
