“The Fruit of Forgiveness” (Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/September 15, 2013)
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along
with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one
another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Eph.
4:31-32, NIV)
12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance
against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all
these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you
were called to peace. And be thankful. (Col. 3:12-15, NIV)
Main Idea: In order to be like Christ we must forgive as
Christ forgives.
- His forgiveness is not determined by
the worthiness or unworthiness of the recipient.
21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of
your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's
physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish
and free from accusation-- 23 if you continue in your faith,
established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.
This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every
creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. (Col.
1:21-23, NIV)
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into
the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins. (Col. 1:13-14, NIV)
8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood,
how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10 For
if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of
his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his
life! (Rom. 5:8-10, NIV)
- His forgiveness is not limited by the
severity of the offence.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 9 ¶
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male
prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10
nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will
inherit the kingdom of God. 11
And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified,
you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of
our God.
Blessed is the one whose transgressions are
forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the one whose sin the
LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. (Ps. 32:1-2,
NIV)
- His forgiveness is not limited by the
number of offences.
12 But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my
hidden faults. (Ps. 19:12, NIV)
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I
forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?" 22
Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
(Matt. 18:21-22, NIV)
- His forgiveness does not keep a
remembrance of wrongs committed.
Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being,
praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all
his benefits-- 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your
diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with
love and compassion, (Ps. 103:1-4, NIV)
8
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9
He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10
he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our
iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so
great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is
from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Ps. 103:8-12,
NIV)
33 "This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after
that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and
write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34
No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the
LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the
greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more." (Jer. 31:33-34, NIV)
- His forgiveness always results in a
relationship.
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matt. 6:14-15, NIV)
3
So watch yourselves. "If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke
them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against
you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying 'I repent,'
you must forgive them." 5 The apostles said to the Lord,
"Increase our faith!" (Lk. 17:3-5, NIV)
