Romans 2:12–16 (NIV)

¹² All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. ¹³ For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. ¹⁴ (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. ¹⁵ They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) ¹⁶ This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

 

1. On the last day, everyone will be judged based on their actual deeds (Rom 2:6, 11, 12).

 

2. Merely possessing or hearing the Word of God will not be an advantage on the Day of Judgment (Rom 2:13).

 

3. What will matter on the Day of Judgment will be actual deeds of righteousness, which will serve as evidence and fruit of Spirit-wrought faith (Rom 2:13).

 

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. (Romans 2:5, NIV)

 

²² But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22, NIV)

 

¹⁴ Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. (Heb. 12:14, NIV)

 

¹² Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation-- but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.  ¹³ For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.  ¹⁴ For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  (Romans 8:12-14, NIV)

 

⁷ Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.  ⁸ Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  ⁹ Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  (Gal. 6:7-9, NIV)
