“My Light and Salvation” (Psalm 27)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/May 3, 2015Psalm 27:1–14 (NIV)
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked advance against me
to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.
4 One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.
7 Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
be merciful to me and answer me.
8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
Your face, Lord, I will seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me,
do not turn your servant away in anger;
you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
God my Savior.
10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will receive me.
11 Teach me your way, Lord;
lead me in a straight path
because of my oppressors.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
for false witnesses rise up against me,
spouting malicious accusations.
13 I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
1. Where do you seek your strength? (vv. 1–3)10 The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. (Prov. 18:10, NIV)2. What do you desire? (vv. 4–6)9 For we are co-workers in God's service; you are God's field, God's building. (1 Co. 3:9, NIV)16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Co. 3:16, NIV)3. What do you pray?Notice how David prays in this particular situation:a. He comes humbly.b. He asks God to hear him and answer his prayer.c. He asks God for wisdom.d. He asks for protection.4. What do you do?Main Idea: In order to properly respond to trials, we must believe in God’s strength and in his wisdom.

“Out of the Depths” – Psalm 1301 A song of ascents. Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD;2 Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. 5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. 7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

“Come See
What God Has Done” (Psalm 66)
Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/July 27,
2014
“The
grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. The
meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they
shout for joy and sing.” (Psalm 65:12–13, NIV)
“Shout for
joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise
glorious.” (Psalm 66:1–2, NIV)
I.
The Worship of the World (vv. 1–4)
“Shout for
joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise
glorious. Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that
your enemies cringe before you. All the earth bows down to you; they sing
praise to you, they sing the praises of your name.”” (Psalm 66:1–4, NIV)
“And they
sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its
seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them
to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the
earth.”” (Revelation 5:9–10, NIV)
II.
The Praise of a Nation. (vv. 5–12)
“Come and
see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind! He turned the sea into
dry land, they passed through the waters on foot— come, let us rejoice in him.
He rules forever by his power, his eyes watch the nations— let not the
rebellious rise up against him.” (Psalm 66:5–7, NIV)
“Praise
our God, all peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard; he has preserved
our lives and kept our feet from slipping. For you, God, tested us; you refined
us like silver. You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. You
let people ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought
us to a place of abundance.” (Psalm 66:8–12, NIV)
III.
The Thanksgiving of a Man. (vv. 13–20)
“I will
come to your temple with burnt offerings and fulfill my vows to you— vows my
lips promised and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble. I will sacrifice fat
animals to you and an offering of rams; I will offer bulls and goats.”
(Psalm 66:13–15, NIV)
““Speak to
Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘If any of
you—whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel—presents a gift for
a burnt offering to the Lord,
either to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering, you must present a male
without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted
on your behalf. Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be
accepted on your behalf. When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship
offering to the Lord to fulfill a
special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to
be acceptable.” (Leviticus 22:18–21, NIV)
“Come and
hear, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me. I cried
out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue.” (Psalm 66:16–17,
NIV)
“If I had
cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;” (Psalm 66:18,
NIV)
“but God
has surely listened and has heard my prayer.” (Psalm 66:19, NIV)
“Praise be
to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!”
(Psalm 66:20, NIV)
Main Idea: God is
worthy of worship and praise from the world, from all of his people, and from
you.

“God to the Rescue” (Psalm 107)
Cameron
Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun PM/July 20, 2014 1. Those who have been delivered by God
give him thanks (vv. 1–3).
“Give thanks to the Lord,
for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed
from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west,
from north and south.” (Psalm 107:1–3, NIV)
Hymn # 544: “Redeemed, How I Love to
Proclaim It”
2. Those who have been delivered by God
tell their stories (vv. 4–32).
a. Wanderers in the Desert (vv. 4–9). “Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to
a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives
ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord
in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a
straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his
wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry
with good things.” (Psalm 107:4–9, NIV)
b. Prisoners (vv. 10–16).“Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners
suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and
despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they
stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them
from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and
broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for
mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.”
(Psalm 107:10–16, NIV) For his anger
lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the
night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5, NIV)
c. Sick People (vv. 17–22).“Some became fools through their rebellious ways and
suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew
near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord
in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word
and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his
wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his
works with songs of joy.” (Psalm 107:17–22, NIV) d. Sailors on the Sea (vv. 23–32).“Some went out on the sea in ships; they were
merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted
up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage
melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’
end. Then they cried out to the Lord
in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the
storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it
grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to
the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the
people and praise him in the council of the elders.” (Psalm 107:23–32, NIV)
Hymn
# 69: “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”
3. Those who have been delivered by God
praise his glorious name (vv. 33–42).“He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into
thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness
of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the
parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and
they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted
vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers
greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers
decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who
pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted
the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The
upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.” (Psalm
107:33–42, NIV)
Hymn
# 213: “We Will Glorify”
4. Those who have been delivered by God
apply their hearts to wisdom (v. 43).
“Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder
the loving deeds of the Lord.”
(Psalm 107:43, NIV)
The upright see
and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. (Psalm 107:42,
NIV)
Let the redeemed
of the LORD tell their story-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, (Psalm 107:2, NIV) Hymn:

“Prayer of the
Afflicted”
Psalm 102
(Eastside Baptist/Wed PM/Nov. 13, 2013)
A prayer of an
afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the LORD.
1. A Cry for Help (vv. 1–2).
1 Hear my prayer, LORD; let my cry for help come to
you. 2 Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn
your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
2. The Distressful Situation (vv. 3–11).
3 For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like
glowing embers. 4 My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I
forget to eat my food. 5 In my distress I groan aloud and am reduced
to skin and bones. 6 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the
ruins. 7 I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof. 8
All day long my enemies taunt me; those who rail against me use my name as a
curse. 9 For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears 10
because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside. 11
My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.
3. Confidence in the Lord in the Midst of a
Distressful Situation (vv. 12–17).
12 But you, LORD, sit enthroned forever; your renown
endures through all generations. 13 You will arise and have
compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has
come. 14 For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust
moves them to pity. 15 The nations will fear the name of the LORD,
all the kings of the earth will revere your glory. 16 For the LORD
will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory. 17 He will respond to the
prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.
4. God’s Concern for His Distressed People (vv.
18–22).
18 Let this be written for a future generation, that
a people not yet created may praise the LORD: 19 "The LORD looked
down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, 20
to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death."
21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise
in Jerusalem 22 when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to
worship the LORD.
5. Hope for the Future, because God is Eternal (vv.
23–28).
23 In the course of my life he broke my strength; he
cut short my days. 24 So I said: "Do not take me away, my God,
in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations. 25
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the
work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will
all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will
be discarded. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never
end. 28 The children of your servants will live in your presence;
their descendants will be established before you."

“Fools at Heart” - Psalm 14 – (Eastside Baptist/Wed
PM/Nov. 6, 2013)
1. The
irrationality of those who deny God (verse 1a).
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."
(Ps. 14:1, NIV)
2. The evil
practices of those who deny God (verses 1b-4).
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who
does good. (Ps. 14:1, NIV)
The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if
there are any who understand, any who seek God. (Ps. 14:2, NIV)
All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no
one who does good, not even one. (Ps. 14:3, NIV)
Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people
as though eating bread; they never call on the LORD. (Ps. 14:4, NIV)
3. The destiny of
those who deny God vs. the destiny of the righteous (verses 5-7).
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is
present in the company of the righteous. (Ps. 14:5, NIV)
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD
is their refuge. (Ps. 14:6, NIV)
Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When
the LORD restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! (Ps. 14:7,
NIV)
Main Idea: Those who foolishly reject
God and live in open rebellion before him do so to their own destruction, but
God will rescue his people.

“Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” -Psalm 90- (Eastside
Baptist/Sun PM/Sept. 29, 2013)
1. The Eternal God
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all
generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole
world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Ps. 90:1-2, NIV)
2. Humanity’s
Mortality
You turn people back to dust, saying, "Return to dust,
you mortals." A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just
gone by, or like a watch in the night. Yet you sweep people away in the sleep
of death-- they are like the new grass of the morning: In the morning it
springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. (Ps. 90:3-6, NIV)
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the
Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. (2
Pet. 3:8, NIV)
3. Our Sin and
God’s Wrath
We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your
indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the
light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our
years with a moan. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our
strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they
quickly pass, and we fly away. If only we knew the power of your anger! Your
wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Ps. 90:7-12, NIV)
4. Our Sin and
God’s Mercy
Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your
servants. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing
for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have
afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be
shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the
Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes,
establish the work of our hands. (Ps. 90:13-17, NIV)
Main Idea
When we meditate on our own sinful frailty in the light of
God’s eternal holiness, our proper response is to call on him for grace and
mercy and seek to do his will.
Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as
wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Eph. 5:15-16, NIV)

[Psa 73:1 NIV]A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.[Psa 73:2 NIV]But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.[Psa 73:3 NIV]For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.[Psa 73:4 NIV]They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.[Psa 73:5 NIV]They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.[Psa 73:6 NIV]Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.[Psa 73:7 NIV]From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.[Psa 73:8 NIV]They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.[Psa 73:9 NIV]Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.[Psa 73:10 NIV]Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.[Psa 73:11 NIV]They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?"[Psa 73:12 NIV]This is what the wicked are like-- always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.[Psa 73:13 NIV]Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.[Psa 73:14 NIV]All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.[Psa 73:15 NIV]If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.[Psa 73:16 NIV]When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply[Psa 73:17 NIV]till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.[Psa 73:18 NIV]Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.[Psa 73:19 NIV]How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors![Psa 73:20 NIV]They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.[Psa 73:21 NIV]When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,[Psa 73:22 NIV]I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.[Psa 73:23 NIV]Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.[Psa 73:24 NIV]You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.[Psa 73:25 NIV]Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.[Psa 73:26 NIV]My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.[Psa 73:27 NIV]Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.[Psa 73:28 NIV]But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

“God’s World and God’s Word” (Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/September 1, 2013)-Psalm 19-1. God reveals his glory and majesty in his world. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Ps. 19:1, NIV)Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. (Ps. 19:2, NIV)They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. (Ps. 19:3, NIV)Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. (Ps. 19:4, NIV)It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. (Ps. 19:5, NIV)It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. (Ps. 19:6, NIV)2. God reveals his truth and righteousness in his Word. The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (Ps. 19:7, NIV)The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. (Ps. 19:8, NIV)The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. (Ps. 19:9, NIV)They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. (Ps. 19:10, NIV)By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. (Ps. 19:11, NIV)Main IdeaWhen we come to know our glorious and righteous God through his world and his Word, it should lead us to penitent, God-centered worship. But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. (Ps. 19:12, NIV)Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. (Ps. 19:13, NIV)May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. “The Good Shepherd”: Psalm 23 (Eastside Baptist/Sun
PM June 9, 2013)
Psalm 23:1
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Psalm 23:2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside
quiet waters,
Psalm 23:3
he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for
his name's sake.
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear
no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Psalm 23:6
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of
my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
1. We
must trust God because He is the Good Shepherd.
…who owns us
…who provides for us
…who guides us
Psalm 106:8
Yet he saved them for his name's sake, to make his mighty
power known.
…who comforts us
…who protects us
…who loves us

The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you
because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of
all peoples.
Deuteronomy 7:8
But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he
swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed
you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

…which results in strengthened faith

“Two Paths” Psalm 1
Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
Psalm 1:2
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.
Psalm 1:3
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-- whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:4
Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Psalm 1:5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
Psalm 1:6
For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
God’s way leads to blessing and eternal life.
· God’s way is totally distinct from the path of sin (v. 1).
Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
· God’s way is clearly marked out by his Word (v. 2).
Psalm 1:2
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.
· God’s way is the only path to true blessing (v. 3).
Psalm 1:3
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-- whatever they do prospers.
The path of sin leads to misery and eternal destruction.
· The path of sin can appear healthy and happy for a season, but it is short lived (v. 4).
Psalm 1:4
Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
· The path of sin results in God’s judgment (v. 5).
Psalm 1:5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
Psalm 1:6
For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Main Idea:
True blessing comes to those walking on God’s path that leads to eternal life.
John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Matthew 7:13
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
Matthew 7:14
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Main Idea:
True blessing comes to those walking on God’s path that leads to eternal life.
