“Before Abraham Was, I AM” (John 8:48–59)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun
AM/June 29, 2014 1.
Jesus gives eternal life (that begins now) to everyone who
keeps his word.
“Very
truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”” (John 8:51,
NIV)
““Lord,”
Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to
her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise
again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the
resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though
they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe
this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son
of God, who is to come into the world.”” (John 11:21–27, NIV)
““Very
truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has
eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
(John 5:24, NIV)
2.
Jesus can give eternal life to those who keep his word,
because he is the Ever-Living One, the Great “I AM,” and the source of all
life.
““Very
truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this,
they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from
the temple grounds.” (John 8:58–59, NIV)
“Moses
said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your
fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what
shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I
am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” God
also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the
name you shall call me from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3:13–15,
NIV)
“Some
of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and
leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up
offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married
a woman and died childless. The second and then the third married her, and in
the same way the seven died, leaving no children. Finally, the woman died too.
Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were
married to her?” Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in
marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come
and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in
marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are
God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account
of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the
Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is
not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.””
(Luke 20:27–38, NIV)
“Then
he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and
the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look
at God.” (Exodus 3:6, NIV)
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be
steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in
the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV)

“Before
Abraham Was, I AM” (John 8:48-59), Part 1 Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 22,
2014 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love
me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why
is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You
belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s
desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for
there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he
is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the
truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty
of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God.”
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you
are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my
Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for
myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very
truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know
that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say
that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you
greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you
think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing.
My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though
you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like
you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father
Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and
you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was
born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,
but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. (John 8:42–59, niv)
30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him. 31 To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are
really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the
truth will set you free.” (John 8:30–32, niv)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my
brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will
give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the
resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The
one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and
whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the
Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11:21–27, niv)
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes
him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over
from death to life. (John 5:24, niv)
Main Idea: Jesus gives eternal life that begins now to everyone who
keeps his Word.

“Who
Is Your Father?” (John 8:37-47)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 8, 2014
30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold
to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have
never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is
a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets
you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are
Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you
have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen
in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your
father.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said
Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you
are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard
from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the
works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,”
they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love
me, for I have come here from God.
The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God.” (John 8:30–47, niv)
Whether or not
you are a child of God cannot be determined by your physical parents or
ancestry.
They
answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" (John 8:33, NIV)
I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. (John 8:37, NIV)
I
am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you are doing
what you have heard from your father. “(John 8:38, NIV)
"Abraham
is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children,"
said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did. (John 8:39, NIV)
As
it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth
that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. (John 8:40, NIV)
It
is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from
Israel are Israel. (Romans 9:6, NIV)
Nor
because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the
contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
(Romans 9:7, NIV)
In
other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God's children,
but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.
(Romans 9:8, NIV)
What
then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses, "I
will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have
compassion." (Romans 9:14-15, NIV)
It
does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God's mercy.
(Romans 9:16, NIV)
A child of God
is supernaturally, spiritually fathered by God by means of the new birth.
Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God." (John 8:47, NIV)
Yet
to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the
right to become children of God– (John 1:12, NIV)
children
born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but
born of God. (John 1:13, NIV)
Jesus
answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless they are born of water and the Spirit. (John 3:5, NIV)
Flesh
gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be
surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' (John 3:6-7, NIV)
The
wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the
Spirit." (John 3:8, NIV)
A child of God
hears and believes the Word of God.
I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. (John 8:37, NIV)
Why
is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
(John 8:43, NIV)
Whoever
belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do
not belong to God." (John 8:47, NIV)
If
anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in
God. (1 John 4:15, NIV)
Everyone
who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God (1 John 5:1, NIV)
We
accept human testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the
testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. (1 John 5:9, NIV)
Whoever
believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God
has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God
has given about his Son. (1 John 5:10, NIV)
And
this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his
Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does
not have life. (1 John 5:11-12, NIV)
A child of God
recognizes and loves the members of his own family.
Jesus
said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come
here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. (John 8:42, NIV)
Everyone
who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves
the father loves his child as well. (1 John 5:1, NIV)
Dear
friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves
has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God,
because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8, NIV)
Dear
friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has
ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made
complete in us. (1 John 4:11-12, NIV)
A child of God
bears the family resemblance with a life that is increasingly conforming
to the will of the Heavenly Father.
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching,
you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free."(John 8:31-32, NIV)
"Abraham
is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children,"
said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did. (John 8:39, NIV)
As
it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth
that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. (John 8:40, NIV)
You
are doing the works of your own father." "We are not illegitimate
children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God
himself." (John 8:41, NIV)
But
you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no
sin. (1 John 3:5, NIV)
No
one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either
seen him or known him. (1 John 3:6, NIV)
Dear
children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is
righteous, just as he is righteous. (1 John 3:7, NIV)
The
one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning
from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the
devil's work. (1 John 3:8, NIV)
No
one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in
them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. (1 John
3:9, NIV)
This
is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil
are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is anyone who
does not love their brother and sister. (1 John 3:10, NIV)
Main Idea: A child of God is known not by any claim to physical
ancestry; a child of God is known by their hearing the Word of God, believing
in Jesus Christ, loving the family of God, and growing in Christlike behavior.

“Truth and Freedom” (John 8:31–38)Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/June 1, 2014John 8:21–3821 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will
look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.” 22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why
he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?” 23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You
are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that
you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed
die in your sins.” 25 “Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from
the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in
judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from
him I tell the world.” 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his
Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak
just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is
with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even
as he spoke, many believed in him. 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold
to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have
never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is
a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets
you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are
Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you
have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen
in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your
father.”
A true disciple
of Jesus remains with him and abides in his teachings. To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching,
you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free." (John 8:31-32, NIV) Now
while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs
he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself
to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind,
for he knew what was in each person. (John 2:23–25, NIV) The
Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to
you-- they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do
not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not
believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, "This is why I told
you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them." From
this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (John
6:63–66, NIV) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32, NIV) Jesus
replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now
a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:34-36, NIV)
A true disciple
of Jesus has been set free from the bondage of sin and demonstrates the
enjoyment of that freedom in holiness.Romans 6:1–236 What
shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By
no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or
don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we
will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For
we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin
might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—7 because
anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also
live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from
the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The
death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to
God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to
God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your
mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer
any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer
yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer
every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For
sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but
under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but
under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer
yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you
obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience,
which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that,
though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the
pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You
have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19 I am using an example from everyday life because of your
human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity
and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to
righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to
sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What
benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those
things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness,
and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is
death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Our response to
Jesus and his Word reveals our true spiritual ancestry. They
answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" (John 8:33, NIV) I
know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill
me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in
the Father's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father."
(John 8:37–38, NIV) The
one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning
from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the
devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's
seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of
God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of
the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is
anyone who does not love their brother and sister. (1 John 3:8–10, NIV) Dear
friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves
has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8, NIV) In
fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not
burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory
that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:3-4, NIV) We
know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of
God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. (1 John 5:18, NIV) Main
IdeaØ
A true child of God and disciple of Jesus remains with
their new Master, abides in his truth, and uses their freedom from the bondage
of sin to progress in holiness.

“A Matter of Life and
Death” (John 8:21–30)Pastor
Cameron/Eastside Baptist/Sunday AM/May 25, 201412 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the
light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will
have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as
your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my
testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you
have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You
judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if
I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the
Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the
testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am one who testifies
for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”
Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 He
spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the
offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will
look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why
he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You
are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that

die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from

1.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you cannot go to be with God (v. 21).
2.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you will die unforgiven and be punished forever for your sins (vv.
23–24).
3.
If you do not believe
in Jesus, you are unaware of your blindness and oblivious to your own eternal
condemnation (vv. 22, 23, 25, 27).
4.
The crucifixion,
resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus will declare his true identity as the
Messiah and divine Son of God, confirming the condemnation of those who do not
believe him (vv. 28–29).
5.
If you believe in Jesus,
you accept the truth of his words and find life and true freedom (v. 30 [with
vv. 31–32]).
Main Idea: Recognizing the
true identity of Jesus of Nazareth is a matter of life and death. If you
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God you find eternal life, but if
you reject him, you will receive eternal death.

“The True Light and the True Witness” (John 8:12–20)
Cameron Jungels/Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/May 4,
2014 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the
light of the world.
“You do not know
me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father
also.” 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple
courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him,
because his hour had not yet come. (John 8:12–20, niv)

“No Condemnation”
(John 7:53–8:11)
Eastside
Baptist/Sun AM/April 27, 2014
53 Then they all went home, 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2At dawn he appeared
again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he
sat down to teach them. 3The
teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery.
They made her stand before the group 4and
said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses
commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" 6They were using this
question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent
down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on
questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you
who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Again he stooped
down and wrote on the ground. 9At
this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first,
until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus straightened
up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11"No one,
sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared.
"Go now and leave your life of sin." (John 7:53–8:11,
NIV)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are
in Christ Jesus, (Romans 8:1, NIV)
2. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If
God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He
who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-- how will he not
also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any
charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one
who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died-- more than that, who was raised to
life-- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (Romans 8:31-34, NIV)

1.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are
in Christ Jesus, 2
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you
free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2, NIV) Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an
obligation-- but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live
according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
misdeeds of the body, you will live. 14 For
those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. (Romans 8:12-14, NIV)
3.
How does this story
apply to me?
a. Perfect justice and
perfect mercy come together in the person of Jesus Christ. His life of perfect
righteousness makes up for my lack of righteousness. Jesus’ atoning death wipes
away the guilt of my sins.
b. Through humble faith
in Christ, every sin is forgiven, and there is now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus.
c. Standing in the
forgiveness of Christ, we leave our life of sin and seek to walk in the
holiness of life in the Spirit, not life in the flesh.
d. Standing in the forgiveness
of Christ, we seek to be merciful as our Savior is merciful and trust that his
grace can save the worst of sinners (including us).
Main Idea: Forgiveness
for sin is found in the mercy of Jesus Christ; those who have been forgiven
leave their life of sin and demonstrate mercy as they have been shown mercy.

“The
King and Savior of All Nations” - John 12:12-33 – (Eastside Baptist/Palm Sunday AM/April 13, 2014)
12 The next day the great crowd that had
come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and
went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of
Israel!" 14 Jesus found
a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 "Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is
coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only
after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written
about him and that these things had been done to him. 17 Now the crowd that was with him
when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to
spread the word. 18 Many
people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to
meet him. 19 So the Pharisees
said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole
world has gone after him!" 20
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the
festival. 21 They came to
Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they
said, "we would like to see Jesus."
22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told
Jesus. 23 Jesus replied,
"The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a
kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.
But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in
this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my
servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. 27 "Now my soul is troubled,
and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this
very reason I came to this hour. 28
Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven,
"I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29 The crowd that was there and
heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. 30 Jesus said, "This voice
was for your benefit, not mine. 31
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will
be driven out. 32 And I, when
I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." 33 He said this to show the kind
of death he was going to die. (John
12:12–33, NIV)
1.
Jesus is the King.
2.

3.
Jesus is the King and Savior of his Jewish people.
4.
Jesus is the King and Savior of all the Nations.
Main
Idea
Ø
Jesus
is the King and Savior of all the nations. Those who repent and believe in the
Lord Jesus Christ will receive forgiveness of sins and partake of his glorious
eternal reign as King.

“Division over Jesus’ Identity” (John
7:37–52), John Message 34(Eastside
Baptist/Sun AM/April 6, 2014)37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus
stood and said in a loud voice, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and
drink. 38 Whoever believes in
me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within
them." 39 By this he
meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to
that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been
glorified. 40 On hearing his
words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the
Prophet." 41 Others
said, "He is the Messiah." Still others asked, "How can the
Messiah come from Galilee? 42
Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David's descendants and
from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" 43 Thus the people were divided
because of Jesus. 44 Some
wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 45 Finally the temple guards went
back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't
you bring him in?" 46
"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards replied. 47 "You mean he has deceived
you also?" the Pharisees retorted. 48
"Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But this mob that knows
nothing of the law-- there is a curse on them." 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to
Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 "Does our law condemn a
man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?" 52 They replied, "Are you
from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come
out of Galilee." (John 7:37–52, NIV)
1.
Jesus’ words bring eternal life and
the gift of the Spirit to all who believe in him (vv. 37–39).
2.
Jesus’ words elicit different
responses to his identity and message (vv. 40–52).
a. Confused or Insufficient Understanding
– the Prophet.
b. Misaligned Expectations or Perceptions
– the Messiah.
c. Undeveloped Amazement – the soldiers –
“no one ever spoke the way this man does.”
d. Vehement Rejection and Hostility – the
religious leadership.
e. Budding Faith – Nicodemus.
f.
Abiding
Faith and Discipleship – the Twelve (minus Judas).
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus
said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John
8:31, NIV).
3.
Jesus’ words cause a fundamental
division between people – those who believe and follow and those who do not.
34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to
the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
"'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- 36 a man's enemies will be the
members of his own household.' 37
"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;
anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their
cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses
their life for my sake will find it.
(Matt. 10:34-39, NIV)
Main Idea:
Because the message of Jesus is a heavenly message that brings eternal life and
the gift of the Spirit, its seriousness and exclusivity will cause a division
between people – between those who believe and those who reject.

and said in a loud voice, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
(John 7:37, NIV)
4. An Eternal Spring.
Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of
living water will flow from within them." (John 7:38, NIV)
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in
him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since
Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7:39, NIV)
Main Idea
Ø The
entire human race is spiritually parched and dry. By God’s grace, Christ leads
us to thirst and in faith to come and drink of his life-giving,
soul-satisfying, eternal Spirit.

“Jesus,
the Man from Heaven” (John 7:14–36) (Eastside Baptist/Sun
AM/March 16, 2014)14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up
to the temple courts and begin to teach.
15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, "How did this
man get such learning without having been taught?" 16 Jesus answered, "My
teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the
will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak
on my own. 18 Whoever speaks
on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the
one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?
Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" 20 "You are
demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill
you?" 21 Jesus said to
them, "I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you
circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the
patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised
on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry
with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere
appearances, but instead judge correctly."
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to
ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly,
and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded
that he is the Messiah? 27
But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know
where he is from." 28
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "Yes, you know
me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who
sent me is true. You do not know him, 29
but I know him because I am from him and he sent me." 30 At this they tried to seize
him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd
believed in him. They said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more
signs than this man?" 32
The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief
priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. 33 Jesus said, "I am with you
for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you
will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come." 35 The Jews said to one another,
"Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go
where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said,
'You will look for me, but you will not find me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot
come'?" (John 7:14–36, NIV)
1. Jesus teaches with heavenly authority
and wisdom (vv. 14–24).
a.
Heavenly wisdom is not taught by men (vv.
14–15).
b.
Heavenly wisdom is authenticated by God (vv.
16–17).
c.
Heavenly wisdom is not self-glorifying but
God-glorifying (v. 18).
d.
Heavenly wisdom is true wisdom (v. 18).
e.
Heavenly wisdom understands the true nature
and purpose of the Law, including the Sabbath (vv. 19–23).
f.
Heavenly wisdom evaluates with a depth of
perception not possible with surface-level assumptions (v. 24).
g.
Application: Those
who believe accept the heavenly authority and wisdom of Jesus’ words (v. 17;
John 6:29).Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching
comes from God or whether I speak on my own. (John 7:17, NIV)Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has
sent." (John 6:29, NIV)Many will be
purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked.
None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
(Dan. 12:10, NIV)
Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is
that you do not belong to God." (John 8:47, NIV)
2. Jesus’ true origin is not from Galilee
but from heaven (vv. 25–31).
a.
Jesus did not come from Galilee but from Bethlehem,
Judea in fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of Micah 5:2 and other Davidic
promises (vv. 25–27).
b.
Jesus’ true origin cannot be fully explained
by Bethlehem, Judea; his true origin is from heaven with God, his Father (v.
28a).
c.
Jesus has true knowledge of the Father and is
able to reveal that knowledge to others because his true origin is from Heaven
(vv. 28b–29).22 "All things have been committed to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father
is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." (Lk.
10:22, NIV)
d.
Jesus’ heavenly origin explains the timing
and unfolding of his life’s events (v. 30).
e.
Application: Those
who believe recognize his heavenly origin in his words and works (v. 31).
Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, "When the Messiah
comes, will he perform more signs than this man?" (John 7:31, NIV)
3. After fulfilling the Father’s will,
Jesus is returning to heaven from where he came (vv. 32–36).
a.
Jesus’ mission on earth would last for a
short time in fulfillment of the Father’s will and appointment (v. 32–33).
b.
When his mission is complete, he will return
to his Father in heaven from where he came (v. 34).
Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the
Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father
and your Father, to my God and your God.'" (John 20:17, NIV)
c.
The Jewish leaders and the people
misunderstood his words because they had not been illuminated by the Spirit to
understand (vv. 35–36; cf. John 8:21–24).
d.
Ironically, Jesus did go to the scattered
Jews and Gentiles and teach them by extension through his apostles, after he
returned to heaven (v. 35).
e.
Application: Those
who believe understand that Jesus is now with his Father God in heaven and that
they too will one day share in the joy of his presence (v. 34, 36; John
8:21–24; John 13:33, 36; John 14:1–3).
You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot
come." (John 7:34, NIV)
What did he mean when he said, 'You will look for me, but you will not find
me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot come'?" (John 7:36, NIV)
21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and
you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot
come." 22 This made the
Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you
cannot come'?" 23 But he
continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I
am not of this world. 24 I
told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,
you will indeed die in your sins."
(John 8:21-24, NIV)
33 "My children, I will be with you only a little
longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now:
Where I am going, you cannot come. (John 13:33, NIV) 36 Simon Peter
asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I
am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." (John 13:36,
NIV)
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also
in me. 2 My Father's house
has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going
there to prepare a place for you? 3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be
with me that you also may be where I am.
4 You know the way to the place where I am going." 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord,
we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" 6 Jesus answered, "I am the
way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me. (John 14:1-6, NIV)
Main
Idea: Jesus is the Man from Heaven, whose words are heavenly
words, whose authority is heavenly authority, and whose mission is to bring
with him to heaven all those who believe in him.
Those
who believe in Jesus Christ accept his divine, heavenly authority; understand
that his origin is from God; and trust that even now Jesus is reigning at his
Father’s side from heaven where they will one day join
their Savior and Lord.

“Who is this man, Jesus?” - John 7:1-13 –
(Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/March 9, 2014
After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in
Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when the Jewish Festival of
Tabernacles was near, 3
Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your
disciples there may see the works you do.
4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret.
Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." 5 For even his own brothers did
not believe in him. 6
Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time will
do. 7 The world cannot hate
you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not
going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come." 9 After he had said this, he
stayed in Galilee. 10
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not
publicly, but in secret. 11
Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking,
"Where is he?" 12
Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He
is a good man." Others replied, "No, he deceives the
people." 13 But no one
would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders. (John 7:1-13,
NIV)
“Who is this man, Jesus?”
1. Maliciously plotted against by those who were supposed
to be righteous teachers of the Scriptures.
After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in
Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.
(John 7:1, NIV)
Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking,
"Where is he?" (John 7:11, NIV)
2. Rejected and ridiculed by his own family.
2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was
near, 3 Jesus' brothers said
to him, "Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may
see the works you do. 4 No
one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing
these things, show yourself to the world."
5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him. 6 Therefore Jesus told them,
"My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but
it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not
going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come." 9 After he had said this, he
stayed in Galilee. 10
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not
publicly, but in secret. (John 7:2-10, NIV)
3. Hated by an evil-loving world.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works
are evil. (John 7:7, NIV)
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming
into the world. 10 He was in
the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not
recognize him. 11 He came to
that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him,
to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of
God-- 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision
or a husband's will, but born of God.
(John 1:9-13, NIV)
4. Misunderstood and distrusted by the crowds.
Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said,
"He is a good man." Others replied, "No, he deceives the
people." But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the
leaders. (John 7:12–13, NIV)
5. The one despised and rejected, who gave his life to
save sinners.
Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time
will do. (John 7:6, NIV)
You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time
has not yet fully come." (John 7:8, NIV)
Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be
glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless
a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.
But if it dies, it produces many seeds. (John 12:23-24, NIV)
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of
suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we
considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought
us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isa. 53:3-5, NIV)
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the LORD has
done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. (Psalm 118:22-23, NIV)
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what
is the meaning of that which is written: "'The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone'? 18
Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it
falls will be crushed." 19
The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him
immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But
they were afraid of the people. (Lk. 20:17-19, NIV)
Jesus is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the
cornerstone.' Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name
under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:11-12,
NIV)
Main Idea: The most misunderstood and rejected person in the history
of the world is the Son of God and only Savior that this world will ever have.

“Abiding in the Word of Life” (John 6:60–71)
(Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/March 2, 2014)47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal
life. 48 I am the bread of
life. 49 Your ancestors ate
the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which
anyone may eat and not die. 51
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will
live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the
world." 52 Then the Jews
began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his
flesh to eat?" 53 Jesus
said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son
of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and
drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last
day. 55 For my flesh is real
food and my blood is real drink. 56
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent
me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live
because of me. 58 This is the
bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but
whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." 59 He said this while teaching in
the synagogue in Capernaum. 60
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who
can accept it?" 61 Aware
that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does
this offend you? 62 Then what
if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the
flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-- they are full of the
Spirit and life. 64 Yet there
are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning
which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This
is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled
them." 66 From this time
many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave
too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. 69
We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of
God." 70 Then Jesus
replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a
devil!" 71 (He meant
Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to
betray him.) (John 6:47–71, NIV)
1. Sometimes those who initially profess
faith in Jesus Christ walk away and abandon Christ.
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among
themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" (John 6:52,
NIV)
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is
a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus
said to them, "Does this offend you?
62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was
before! 63 The Spirit gives
life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-- they are
full of the Spirit and life. 64
Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from
the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. (John 6:60–64, NIV)
From this time many of his disciples turned back and
no longer followed him. (John 6:66, NIV)
2. Those who abandon Christ demonstrate
that they were never truly his followers.
Yet there are some of you who do not believe."
For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who
would betray him. (John 6:64, NIV)
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,
many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. 24 But Jesus would not entrust
himself to them, for he knew all people.
25 He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew
what was in each person. (John 2:23–25, NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John 8:31, NIV)
Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you
have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.
This is how we know it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18, NIV)
22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the
Christ. Such a person is the antichrist-- denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has
the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, see that what you
have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain
in the Son and in the Father. 25
And this is what he promised us-- eternal life.
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are
trying to lead you astray. (1 John 2:22–26, NIV)
They went out from us, but they did not really
belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us;
but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. (1 John 2:19, NIV)
Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the
Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" (He meant Judas, the son of Simon
Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.) (John 6:70–71,
NIV)
While I was with them, I protected them and kept
them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to
destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. (John 17:12, NIV)
3. True faith is abiding faith, because
it is accomplished by a supernatural work of God’s grace that does not fail.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in
me, and I in them. (John 6:56, NIV)
He went on to say, "This is why I told you that
no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them." (John 6:65,
NIV)
All those the Father gives me will come to me, and
whoever comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6:37, NIV)
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I
shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last
day. (John 6:39, NIV)
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to
the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up
at the last day." (John 6:40, NIV)
"No one can come to me unless the Father who
sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:44, NIV)
4. True, abiding faith remains in Christ
because he is the Word of life.
From this time many of his disciples turned back and
no longer followed him. "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus
asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that
you are the Holy One of God." (John 6:66–69, NIV)
Main Idea:
Not all that appears to be faith is really faith;
true, grace-wrought faith abides in Jesus the Word of life.

“Feasting on the Bread of Life” - John
6:47-59 – (Eastside Baptist/Sun

47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal
life. 48 I am the bread of

the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which

because of me. 58 This is the
bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but
whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." 59 He said this while teaching in
the synagogue in Capernaum. (Jn. 6:47–59 NIV)
1. The bread that Jesus offers is
heavenly and eternal, and can only be seen with spiritual eyes.
I am the bread of life. (John 6:48, NIV)
But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,
which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from
heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh,
which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:50–51, NIV)
For the bread of God is the bread that comes down
from heaven and gives life to the world." (John 6:33, NIV)
At this the Jews there began to grumble about him
because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They
said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we
know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" "Stop grumbling
among yourselves," Jesus answered. "No one can come to me unless the
Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John
6:41–44, NIV)
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.
The words I have spoken to you-- they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet
there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the
beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to
say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father
has enabled them." (John 6:63–65, NIV)
2. The bread that Jesus offers is
himself, which must be broken in vicarious sacrifice.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will
give for the life of the world." (John 6:51, NIV)
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and
said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John
1:29, NIV)
Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no
life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I
will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:53–54, NIV)
3. Everyone who receives the bread of
Jesus’ sacrifice in faith is granted eternal life.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will
give for the life of the world." (John 6:51, NIV)
Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no
life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I
will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:53–54, NIV)
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to
the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up
at the last day." (John 6:40, NIV)
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your
ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live
forever." (John 6:58, NIV)
For my flesh is real food and my blood is real
drink. (John 6:55, NIV)
4. True faith in Jesus is an abiding
faith that looks to him for the only bread that can truly satisfy.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in
me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the
Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread
that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever
feeds on this bread will live forever." (John 6:56–58, NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John 8:31, NIV)
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can
bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit
unless you remain in me. (John 15:4, NIV)
If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch
that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the
fire and burned. (John 15:6, NIV
Then Jesus
declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go
hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. (John 6:35, NIV)
Main Idea
Ø Jesus,
the bread of heaven, has been broken in sacrifice, and all who feast on him in
abiding faith have eternal life and joy.

gives you the true bread from heaven. 33
For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to
the world." 34
"Sir," they said, "always give us this bread." 35 Then Jesus declared, "I am
the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever
believes in me will never be thirsty. 36
But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me
will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from
heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who
sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up
at the last day. 40 For my
Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall
have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day." 41 At this the Jews there began to
grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from
heaven." 42 They said,
"Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?
How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" 43 "Stop grumbling among
yourselves," Jesus answered. 44
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I
will raise them up at the last day. 45
It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who
has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father
except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one
who believes has eternal life. 48
I am the bread of life. (Jn. 6:32–48
NIV)
1. Spiritual truths cannot be seen with physical eyes.
At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he
said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They said,
"Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?
How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" (John 6:41–42, NIV)
2. Spiritual truths must be revealed and taught by God.
"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered.
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I
will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: 'They will
all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him
comes to me. (John 6:43–45, NIV)
All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will
be their peace. (Isa. 54:13, NIV)
Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see
the kingdom of God unless they are born again." (John 3:3, NIV)
Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can
enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. (John
3:5, NIV)
"This is the covenant I will make with the people of
Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in
their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be
my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another,
'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the
greatest," declares the LORD. (Jer.
31:33–34, NIV)
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I
will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you
to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. (Ezek. 36:26-27, NIV)
3. Everyone taught by God comes to see who Jesus truly is
and believes.
It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by
God.' Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. (John
6:45, NIV)
All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever
comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6:37, NIV)
No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;
only he has seen the Father. (John 6:46, NIV)
I am the bread of life. (John 6:48, NIV)
4. Everyone who believes in Jesus receives eternal life
and the satisfaction of their soul.
Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal
life. I am the bread of life. (John
6:47-48, NIV)
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son
and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the
last day." (John 6:40, NIV)
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever
comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be

For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." 30 So they asked him, "What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' (John 6:25–40, NIV) 1. Jesus is a soul-fulfilling Savior. Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. (John 6:35, NIV)2. Jesus is often a rejected Savior. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. (John 6:36, NIV) 3. Jesus is an obedient Savior. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. (John 6:38–39, NIV) 4. Jesus is an unfailing Savior. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6:37, NIV) And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. (Rom 8:30 NIV) What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Rom 8:31 NIV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? (Rom 8:35 NIV) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. “Jesus, the True Manna from Heaven” - John 6:22-35 –
(Part 2)
(Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/Jan. 26, 2014)
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake
realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it
with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some
boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread
after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that
neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to
Capernaum in search of Jesus. (Jn. 6:22-24, NIV)
1. Don’t
follow Jesus as a means to gain earthly treasures. Seek Christ for his own sake
as your greatest and eternal treasure.
25 When they found him on the other side of the
lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" 26
Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not
because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had
your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that
endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the
Father has placed his seal of approval." (Jn.
6:25–27, NIV)
2.
Don’t trust that you can be made right with God
by the good works that you can perform.
Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works
God requires?" Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe
in the one he has sent."
(Jn. 6:28-29, NIV)
3.
Don’t put God to the test by expecting him to
meet your demands for verification.
So they asked him, "What sign then will you give that
we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in
the wilderness; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.'"
(Jn. 6:30-31, NIV)
Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, it is not
Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives
you the true bread from heaven. (Jn. 6:32, NIV)
For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from
heaven and gives life to the world."
(Jn. 6:33, NIV)
4.
Find true, eternal joy and a restored
relationship with God by believing in Jesus, the True Manna from Heaven.
"Sir," they said, "always give us this
bread." Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes
to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got
into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When
they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when
did you get here?" 26 Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell
you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but
because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for
food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of
Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of
approval." (John 6:22–27, NIV)
Main Idea: Don’t follow Jesus as a means to gain earthly
treasures. Seek Christ for his own sake as your greatest and eternal treasure.

“Jesus, Lord of the Storm”- John 6:16-21 –
(Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/Jan. 12, 2014)
When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it
was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the
waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw
Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But
he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid." Then they were willing
to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where
they were heading. (Jn. 6:16–21, NIV)
The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the
very depths were convulsed. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded
with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. Your thunder was heard in the
whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked. Your
path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints
were not seen. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
(Ps. 77:16–20, NIV)
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the
waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their
peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they
were at their wits' end. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and
he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the
waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided
them to their desired haven. (Ps. 107:25–30, NIV)
Main Idea: Jesus, the Son of God, is worthy
of our trust in the storms of life, because he is the Lord of the storm.

“Jesus Feeds the People” (John 6:1–15)
Eastside Baptist/Sun AM/Jan. 5, 2014
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far
shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a
great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed
by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat
down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to
Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to
do. 7 Philip answered him, "It would take more than half a
year's wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" 8
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9
"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how
far will they go among so many?"
10
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in
that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11
Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were
seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the
pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." 13 So they
gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley
loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the
sign Jesus performed, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who
is to come into the world." 15 Jesus, knowing that they
intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by
himself. (Jn. 6:1-15, NIV)
1. Jesus is the Divine Son of God who is infinite in
power.
2. Jesus is the master Teacher who instructs his
disciples about faith.
3. Jesus is full of compassion and feeds the hungry.
4. Jesus is the new and greater Moses, who leads,
teaches, provides, and intercedes for his people.
5. Jesus is the king of his own kingdom; he refuses to be
used as a symbolic figurehead of a kingdom of our own design.
